This is really a silly question. Who is the parent. My son is allowed on the computer three times a week. No more. How can you minimize computer use? Put your foot down. Turn the damn thing off, give them something else to do...have them read a book..there's so much more than computers.

Make a rule of the length of time they can stay on the computer and restrict the games in which they play. Reward and discipline for good and bad computer time. You can come with your on reward system. I know this is hard to do sometimes but I was having the same problem with the TV now my son gets thirty minutes on the week days and two hours on the weekend. He had a hard time at first but he has adjusted to my rules. Your kids will too. They are going to be angry when you first make the rule, and they are going to hate you, but stick to your guns.

1. Get rid of the silly/violent games.
2. Limit their Internet access.
3. Limit their time on the computer. Guide them in finding other interests.
As a teacher and a tax-paying citizen, how are their grades? If they aren't the greatest, investing time on homework would be a wise choice.
Questions like this from people floor me... Who's the parent here? Aren't you supposed to be the one setting the limits and enforcing them?

We limit our kids usage because we can WE'RE THE MOM AND DAD!!!!! Unless it is school work, they get a half hour, and we use an egg timer. They are not aloud to play games uless they are on the school district web site because those are learning games. Our computer is in the livingroom so there is no sneaking onto sites where they shouldn't be. If you want boundries, you have to set them and stick to them. It's not being strict or mean, it's being a parent!

Either don't let them go on it for more than 2 hours a day, or try finding things that they might enjoy doing outside of the house. Teach them how to ride a bike or a skateboard...
My 11 year old brother is already addicted to the computer. He is on it for about 8 hours almost every day.

Make them earn their computer time with chores. Give the kids a 30 minute coupon each time they complete a task that you ask them to do. They can turn in them in immediately or save them up for an extended computer session.

We use a timer at our house. No games that are not educational on school nights. Only 1/2 hour of tv or game that is educational on school night, but only one or the other. On weekends they can watch 1 hour of tv or vidoe game in am and another in pm, but only if chores are done, homework is done and rooms are clean.
Also, if the sun is shining, they are sent outside. No rain, no games in our house. Before bed, each boy is sent to lay on his bed and read for 1/2 hour also.
We also will unplug the game and remove it if the timer goes off and they don't get off the computer or game or TV immediately.
Seems strict, but it works well for us.

Pull the plug.......YOU are the parents.
Set limits on what type of games you'll allow. Supervise their play so they are only playing stuff you approve of.
Set time limits on how much screen time you'll allow. Maybe make them earn screen time based on behavior, chores completed, grades, etc. I've also heard of some families earning screen time based on how much reading they do. (You read an hour, you can play computer for an hour.)
Stick to the limits and enforce them.
