To previous poster:
Why not seek to create hope in this world, and to improve this world while you're in it? I'm not saying you DON'T do that, but you seem content enough to let things be bad in this world if only to be in a better world in the end.

I think most often you will find that people who have been through unbearable loss, stress, near death, loss of a child, or the like, turn to God to find reason why they should continue to exist. We all need fortitude, and at a person's weakest most vulnerable time in their lives, many find an inner peace and from that is born a strength to continue on. There are many who have not had severe adversity, other than say a job loss, divorce or some sickness. When one does have a horrific event, ones life is extremely humbled, and changed forever. Quite often with the belief in God comes a strength that we cannot pull from others like us. We look to a greater and larger being to find reason of why the event is what it is, or to find out what the meaning of our existence is.

THEY need a reason, so they assume everyone does. Of course it's great just to be alive, if the only thing i ever accomplish in my life is listening to Rubber Soul and Revolver by the Beatles (which i did in the last week), i am thankful for that. It was enjoyable while it lasted. Period.

Yes, you are right but they are told that if they don't do everything the way bible says, they are sinners with a ticket to hell. Politically they are hit with the Republican pledge and threat. The way I see it is believe what ever you want and try to live as honestly as possible. You can have faith without a major religious commitment. A little common sense goes a long ways.

Why do non believers have such a hard time thinking people might want their children to some day be in a better world than the one we have? One where there is no one starving, one that you don't have to worry about you children being taken out of your house at night , raped, tortured and buried alive. It is a sick world. If people want to hope for something better. why try to take it away.

People just do not know how to think.
If you do a simple search on "moral atheism" or "atheism meaning to life"
there is a complete and reasonable philosophy for meaning without God - That makes much better sense than needing some "cosmic nanny" who will hold our hands throughout eternity.

I highly recommend you read Rick Warren's Book- the Purpose Driven Life.
And if you are an atheist I am afraid no matter how many paint cans I throw at you, you will not turn the color paint I am throwing.

Without a moral law giver ( God ) there is no reason or authority for morality.
If there is no reason for morality then logically there is no reason
d'etre.
This stuff is simple logic. Even I understand this.
