This link above is for church altars, but can easily be minimized to fit specifications for your home, or at least give you an idea.
Now, I have had two altars in my home. The first one was created by using those old school desks, you remember those? The seat was connected...well took the seat out and kept the bottom for support for my big butt, my dad welded the desk portion to more flat instead of the original angle. Then I went to Hobby Lobby and got padding..I'm a wuss, I got LOTS! and then to Wally World and to Fabric section they have upholstery there, and I was double lucky they had the upholstery in the "$1.00/yd" section. I got 5 yards, then used Dad's staple gun, he also had plenty of wood for me to use for the kneeling portion. Sorry to say to you I don't know what he did to secure the kneeler to the bottom portion. This desk had the open slot, so in there I kept my extra devotional cards, candles, etc. I went and purchased some pretty fabric to overlay. Please review the fisheaters.com site for great ideas, I wish I had that site then!
Now, my second one was an older bureau which was low and I just put the liturgical colored clothes on it, my candle, incense thinga-ma-jig, my statue of Our Mother, among other things.
Blessings to you, and Have a Blessed Lenten Season!!

Home altars can be set up in any manner you want. My 6 year old daughter made one all on her own. She put a pretty white cloth on a table, added a vigil candle, her rosary and her Bible, along with her statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

I wish I could help you. Why not go to a parish and ask the people there? I am sure they can recommend some names to you.
Grace and peace!
