As an invading force, the U.S. Marines did their job. As a police force, there is a lack of acceptability and credibility by the people of Iraq regarding the Marines.

Are we overstaying our welcome???

Fear, Anger, Stress Grip Iraqis, Poll Finds
Few Express Confidence in U.S.-Led Troops
By WILL LESTER
AP
WASHINGTON (March 19) - The optimism that helped sustain Iraqis during the first few years of the war has dissolved into widespread fear, anger and distress amid unrelenting violence, a survey found.

The poll -- the third in Iraq since early 2004 by ABC News and media partners -- draws a stark portrait of an increasingly pessimistic population under great emotional stress. Among the findings of this survey for ABC News, USA Today, the BBC and ARD German TV:

-- The number of Iraqis who say their own life is going well has dipped from 71 percent in November 2005 to 39 percent now.

-- About three-fourths of Iraqis report feelings of anger, depression and difficulty concentrating.

-- More than half of Iraqis have curtailed activities like going out of their homes, going to markets or other crowded places and traveling through police checkpoints.

-- Only 18 percent of Iraqis have confidence in U.S. and coalition troops, and 86 percent are concerned that someone in their household will be a victim of violence.

Did Germany police their own population have we kicked the crap out of them in WWII? No it took years for them to get a government going and to be able to function on their own. If you really think about it we were fighting terrorist in Germany up in till the early 80's

It takes time, just let the soldiers do their job and quite bit** about it.

Of course they ought to police themselves; the problem is, Iraq is woefully unable to police itself. If it WERE, we wouldn't be there anymore--that is the point we're trying to get to. Leaving early certainly isn't somehow going to "motivate" them to wake up and take care of themselves, like so many people here seem to think. If we pull out prematurely, before Iraq is capable of sustaining, protecting, and policing itself, far more people are going to die than have died there in the past four years, no question. It all boils down to whether you allow political peer pressure to decide issues for you, or whether you believe in finishing the job correctly, even if the circumstances that got us there were wrong. You can debate the US entry into a war with Iraq all you want, but that was four years ago. It's a different conflict now with completely different problems, and like it or not, we're THERE... and we have an obligation to those people and to ourselves and our own future to finish the job and do it right, instead of copping out.

The war in Iraq is best said to be a losing battle that happens over and over. That is of course if your a liberal or part of the media. The reason we are in Iraq might not have been Justified with Weapons of mass destruction that were found, but do you really believe Saddam had nothing? Anyway we are there now and if we pull out to soon it will become a breeding ground for people that don't like the united states. War is best fought on other peoples grounds, like it or not! Americans did not like 9/11, it appalled us because it happened here on our soil. Do you think the people would be against the war if it was happening in downtown Boston,Miami, or even Back woods Kansas? I would bet we all would want to fight!

No, we are in this mess untill we can get the Iraqi people up to speed, I dont think we have done that yet. Getting out now will only make matters worse, the terrorists will take over the country and they will be even stronger than they were

well. no matter what the news says these days. because we invaded iraq to "de-throne" a genocidal tyrant, we will have to maintain a military presence there for quite a long time. if we were to pull out all of our forces now, iraq would be in a total state of anarchy. i think that the government of iraq is not yet strong enough to police their own people yet. while they were under sadaams rule, the only police was the military of iraq. so while we are there i think that we should be showing the people of iraq how to police themselves so that when the time does come for us to pull out that they will be able to maintain a sense of law and order within their country.

We are definitely over staying our welcome!!! Our men and women over there should beable to come home. I have had 3 people in my family die over there within the last year...And for what???!!!! Don't get me wrong....I do support my family that is over there and the other soilders, but I think they have been over there way too long and the Iraqis need to use their own damn police to do the protection of their country. The problem has already been solved, so why do more people have to die and leave their families behind? They are scared of our troops being over there anyways, so why not bring our families home? Hillary Clinton will bring our men and women home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, the Iraq population should police its own. But unfortunately (right now) its a bit like asking my four year old son's kindergarten class to police school hallways.

The war was wrong, wrong, wrong to begin with. The problems, including the civil war was of the American Invasive Army's doing. The way they interrogated men in the prisons are highly based on whether you're a Sunni, Kurd ot Shiah, hence igniting the sentiments between themselves.

Anyways, it would have to be a coalition between said three factions police squad, which is obviously not going to happen anytime soon.

Well, the Americans will stay as long as there are American investors reaping profit there and yes, you have indeed overstayed your welcome.
