Lots of people are as spiritually dead as they, sometimes the people who claim to be the most religious. False believers exist in all religions. So too do true thinkers, who also exist amongst atheists and agnostics - and it's that small portion of people who are questioning, who are searching, who are not resting on their religious laurels, who have made all the advancements that have occurred in religion.

I'm not personally familiar with the Taliban, so I can't comment on their spirituality, or lack thereof. I thought they were fundamentalist Muslims.
I have heard that Talib means Student. Perhaps they see themselves as some kind of self styled group of 'students of the Word'.
Obviously, they believe in something, or they wouldn't have been able to form a coherent group. Quite likely, as other people have said, it's politically motivated, as much as religiously. As for their spiritual beliefs, well, I don't know.
