nicotinic is known to exhibit excitatory effect. does it exhibit inhibitory effect too?
muscarinic receptor exhibit both excitatory and inhibitory effect.
can anyone tell me more?

They're both stimulated by ACh -- they just use different mechanisms of transmitting the message intracellularly.

Simply put, they are both receptors for ACh, acetylcholine. They differ in how they work: nicotinic receptors are ion channels, whereas muscarinic cause g-coupled reactions. More importantly, nicotinic receptors are mainly found in the CNS and in neuromuscular junctions of skeletal muscle. Muscarinic receptors are more found in the parasympathethic (autonomic) nervous system. edit** If you're interested in the actual mechanism of the response to ACh binding, let me know.

Both nicotinic and muscarinic receptors are receptors for acetylcholine. The important difference between the two is their mode of action. Nicotinc acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are ionotropic receptors, meaning that they allow ions to pass through them when they bind to acetylcholine. Therefore, these receptors help depolarize the cell in response to acetylcholine and are excitatory.

Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs), on the other hand are metabotropic receptors (G-protein coupled receptors). This means that mAChRs activate G-proteins in response to acetylcholine and these G-proteins can have different cellular responses depending on which G-proteins are activated and on what proteins these G-proteins act.

One is used by those who are addicted to nicotine and the other for those addicted to muscle building. You figure out just who uses what!
