Absolutely, it's called jerky. Jerkly will last for a very long time... however salting other types of meat, such as steak, takes a lot of taste out of it and makes it much tougher. When it comes to most types of meat, the best thing to do is refridgerate it.

Another thing... you don't have the stomach that people did back then... they were much more able to fight of bacteria and other microbes that resided on the meat. If you ate the way they did all the sudden, you would be getting pretty sick.

Of course you could still do that today. The meat is the same. Salt is still used to preserve meats. How would you do it? Call the good people at Slim Jim and ask how they do it.

Yes. Look at meats like pepperoni, and salami. Corned beef is another meat like this. If you look at the list there you can see that all of those things last a long time (months) and if sealed, you can store them at room temperature for a while.

You could, but its not as likely to last as long now, meat has far to many preservatives in it now, for it to work in the same way as it once did.

My ex father-in-law gave me a ham that he had cured in salt. It hung in his barn in a burlap bag for two years. It was........salty. That was over ten years ago. Haven't been near a pig since.

Did I mention that was my "ex"?
