People spend so much time devoting their time. ie. prayers and rituals for the dead after they have been dead for sooo many years and continue to worry about their afterlife when there's so much to be done now. Why is it that people care more about later than now. People, and animals are dying now and need our help...i'm not saying let's all get on our knees and cry for them, but isn't the right thing to do help those who are in need now?

I never said we shouldn't remember our dead, but our money and time and worries have greater meaning if they are for those who are in need now.

I agree Koalabea... it seems that generally the populace are no more dynamic than a herd of lambs sometimes. The society is so unconcerned with looking after one another rather than caring for life and making improvements.
Hopefully you will find a way to pose that question so that it will make a difference whereby creating a trend of thinking.

There is a deep-seeded need in people to exist indefinately. By devoting portions of our lives to the afterlife, and to those who have "moved on", we are reassuring ourselves that our loved ones arn't completely gone, and that our existance will not cease at our deaths. It is very hard for people to contemplate not existing. People don't want to think that when you stop breathing, that's it for you. This has been true for most of our species' history.

And you're right, there is so much to be done now. But there is going to be even more to be done after we die. And again you're right, people and animals are dying right now... but they are SUPPOSE to be dying right now. I know it sounds cold-hearted, but the leading cause of death is living. And I'm by no means telling you to not help your fellow human beings... religious groups help so many people all the time. But to say that their time of worship should be spent in other ways is selfish, because you are essentially claiming your morals are more important than theirs. If you've been to church, you'd realize that these people arn't just there for themselves, most of their prayers are for loved ones, friends, and people suffering around the world. And they feel this is one way they can help people. You don't have the knowledge nor the authority to tell them that it isn't doing any good. My parents are religious (I'm not so much) so I went to Sunday School and Youth Group all through my childhood, and we would be out there helping at soup kitchens and building things for the community. Don't assume all these people do is sit their and mourn over lost ones. They go to remember those before them, and look for guidance and strength to live a better life.

true. Make here and now our heaven, sort of thing. I agree, but there still needs to be some time for prayer in my opinion.

My opinion is that the correct view of dieing *allows* you a correct view on what's important in the world we live in.

To value life you must first put it into its correct context.
