There are so many but it's hard to know which are the popular or well known ones as opposed to more rare ones? are the rare ones better quality? If you know where they were produced even better. thanks

It really depends on your taste, so i would go buy like sample size portions and then taste test and see what you like the best, i dont belive the rare ones were made any better, i just belive that they only distribute it to diffrent places and such things like that

As mentioned before, Jameson's is a good place to start. It's mellow but not bland (to me anyway). Although it's Irish whiskey and not Scottish whisky. I think Irish whiskeys are more subtle in taste than Scotch, but of course it's all to do with taste.
I have tasted some of the pricier drinks and to me they are not worth the money (marketing etc), but hey, what do I know? I'm no expert. But I will say, there is a huge difference (especially regarding bourbon) between the different classifications eg Scotch, Irish, bourbon.
I like them all, but for me, Jameson 12 year old takes the prize.

Jamisons scotch whiskey is always a good one to start with,
try to always get a scottish brand, they are usually the better quality.
Then there are lesser brands, such as Johnny Walker, Jack Daniels and the like.

When you say "Whiskey" do you mean bourbon? because whiskey is bourbon and "whisky" is Scotch

Makers Mark
Weller
Jim Beam
Jack Daniels
Agewood bourbon from Panama is the best of all if they still make it as they used to make it years ago.

jameson "irish" whiskey is good. bushmills is also good. jack daniel's single barrel is excellent.
