Very good, there is no such thing as a "soul" that goes to heaven (or hell) when you die. Everything takes place in the brain. When the brain dies, you die.

If the chemicals react and form consciousness, then the supply of the same chemicals at the time of death should bring back the consciousness in the the dead body. It does not happen even though all the chemicals are present in the body. The simple reason is that the soul, the active principle behind the consciousness has left the body.
Life symptoms or cetana or consciousness is due to the presence of the soul. The body which like a machine consisting of digestive mechanism, respiratory mechanism, excretory mechanism etc... all of which stop their function as soon as the spirit soul leaves the body and the machinery stops working.
As far as brain cells or hormones are concerned, they are on a gross material level. The spirit soul is on the spiritual level, much higher than the groos and subtle level.

does the engine, or car's computer drive the car? or do you, as the person behind the wheel, drive it?
you are simply incorrect in the assertion that the conciousness comes from the functions of the brain. it really is that simple.
the brain is a device to operate the functions of the body. it does have some thinking capacity of its own, but it is not wholely responsible for what makes people who they are, as such.
there *is* a soul, that most people *do* have. even if they do not believe so. it is their true self that is aware separately from their body and does continue on after death, and exists before they are conceived.
drugs, alcohol? if I put the wrong fuel in your car's gas tank, it will preform differently. I put other unintended things into it it can foul up, preform badly, malfunction or break entirely.
brain damage? I take a sledgehammer to your car's engine, it'll cease functioning properly. I beat on other parts of the car's control and operation systems it might function partially, but not as you as the driver intend it.
if your brake line gets cut, or springs a leak, or gets air bubbles in it, you won't be able to stop as effectively, or possibly at all. does that mean you as a driver can't intend to stop, or don't know to? or don't intend to? or that theres merely a mechanical malfunction between your intent, and the car's mechanism to act on your intention?

First, electrical impulses and chemical reactions don't create consciousness. It is all there all along within and without, bound by no limits. What was given to us by the process you mentioned is the awareness of our consciousness. consciousness not bound by our awareness is what I believe they called subconscious. Consciousness is one of the qualities of the spirit. When a spirit fuses with a material energy(physical body) a crossbreed between the two qualities is born which we heard so often as souls. The quality of the soul depends largely on its environment, genetic inheritance and overall physical attributions. So a damaged brain could well result to a dysfunctional soul. Upon physical death the soul won't survive long. The spirit returns along with the recent knowledge acquired through lifetime as dysfunctional soul. Why? Has to do with karma.

The
English word 'soul' is translated from the Hebrew word NEPHESH, which means " that which breathes'
So our 'soul' is us, living breathing.
There is no separate part of us that leaves us at death.
(ECCLESIASTES 9:5-6) “For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. 6 Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun.”
If this is believed, then it follows that there cannot be any such thing as ghosts of people.
But people do see things. so what are they?
They are demons, taking on the aspects of people who have died.
Demons do have access to knowledge in the world.

The mind has the brain going for it. The soul has the heart going for it. It's the heart that God looks at when He judges us, not the mind that stores information. Information doesn't necessarily bring about actions for Christ, whereas the heart does. Satan has info, believes and trembles, but he's been judged, awaiting his execution to the lake of eternal fire. But the heart houses the Holy Spirit who indwells us. So the not much left area is the big heart that is full of life or a decaying muscle that has not been nourished by The Word of God. How's your heart doing?

Soul is the driving force of our body. It is the fuel which keeps our body alive. e.g. when our car runs out of fuel it will stop. Same is the case with our body. When soul leaves our body, we care dead.
Soul is beyond the five elements viz. touch, smell, vision, taste, and hearing. That is why we do not fell the presence of soul in our body.
There is a famous experiment whereby a person who was on the very verge of death-bed volunteered for the experiment. He was kept in an air-tight glass chamber. When that person was dead, there was a small crack on the glass. This means there was something that went out of the glass chamber, which was nothing else but the soul.

There are people who have had parts of their brain removed for medical purposes, perhaps a tumor, or a severe head trauma. These people often lose a large portion of their intellect, but in many cases, the person they were before is still present. The idea being that our intellect and our personhood, the 'me', are separate.
I have a mind with which I think and store information, but I am aware of my thoughts, they are not 'who I am'. I sense within myself that they are separate.
Read C.S. Lewis, "Surprised by Joy" he talks about this concept in an amazing way.

Not that I equate a mind with a soul, I don't, but are you of the opinion that a soul can't grow and change? And if a soul can't damn itself by it's falls, then how do you expect anyone else to damn it? Not that I believe in damnation. :)
If my soul is in some sort of a static state, well then I don't know what I'm doing here on earth.

My 'soul' are not my mind. My soul is the part of me that will go to Heaven when I die. My mind is part of my physical body, which is an empty shell. The Bible says I get a new body and mind when I get to Heaven, so there is much left for God.
