I am about to draw a picture for a friend of mine and I would like to incorparate those characters into the artwork. I do not need the English translation, but the actual Japanese lettering. Thanks so much to anyone who can help me. I am sure my friend would be grateful too.

Well, there are many words for 'Life' and 'Death' in Japanese. Including 生死 (seishi) which is a combo of the 2 most common characters for life (生) and death (死). 生死 (seishi) is a one word compound that means 'life and death'.
However, the characters could be used individually ^^.

I like to use the character "inochi" for life, actually.

命 死

those would be the two i'd use.
