This is the old guy, Mr. Diversity talking. In a perfect world, an amateur boxer gets paid no money. I had 133 amateur fights, starting in the late 60's. The winners of individual bouts or "smokers" or even tournaments, got medals, trophies, and sometimes cheap watches. When all the fights were done, there would sometimes be a guy approaching all the winners with watches and offer to buy them from you. This was considered an honest way to give the winner a few dollars, while still abiding by the rules. That is another reason that boxing use to be called "prize fighting."
Additionally, if a boxer/fighter has what "the right people" think is a good future, he or she might be slipped a few dollars or have all gym fee's paid for, food,a place to live, etc.
Lastly, in the last few years, a boxer/fighter who has garnered some public interest might have endorsement possibilities as long as they don't conflict with the International Olympic Committee or International Amateur Boxing Association.

I don't think the life is any more lonely than that of most other professions. Most jobs take you away from your family for AT LEAST 8 hours a day. Boxing is not very lucrative, however, unless you're fighting pay per view fights. Most of the fights you see on HBO even pay far less than you might imagine, with the exception of the few big names like Mayweather, Pacquiao, Mosley, and comparably high profile fighters. It does pay in other ways, though. I just box as a hobby, but I do dedicate a lot of time and energy to it. When you put yourself through the kind of challenges that boxing training requires, you become mentally stronger and that strength in character has effects that reach far beyond the realm of boxing into every aspect of your life. You learn that suffering is merely temporary and you also learn a lot about the difference between the mind, body, and soul. When it comes to earning a living, though, just about any other career you choose would be easier and pay better. Boxers do it for the love of the sweet science more than anything else.

The blogbaba has to give Keith and Matt each a thumbs up, a paid fighter is a professional not an amateur. Amateurs don't get paid. Defenders referring to after the fact transactions, not compensation for the actual fight agreed upon in advance that professionals enjoy. Great answer though, blogbaba gave Defender a thumb up just for the prize fighting definition.
