As others have already pointed out, the New Testament vision of Peter (already cited by another poster) is used by many, but not all, Christians as a justification for eating formerly "unclean" foods. Also, many Christians feel that the Old Testament dietary laws have long since been done away with.

In the Old Testament, God gave the law with a reason. To allow man to realize that we are not capable of fulfilling it, and so need a different way to be "clean" before God. And though many Christians use Acts 10 to say it's OK to eat pork, shrimp, lobster, catfish, and shark, and other foods, I have only ever viewed that passage as God telling Peter to take the gospel of Jesus to the gentiles. And to me now, that I must take it to people that I might think "don't deserve it".

As far as all those dietary laws, those foods will still kill you. Just like scotch and cigars, they are "legal" but do not edify. I usually avoid those foods that the bible says are bad, not "religiously", but rather for my health. I do sometimes indulge in peperoni pizza.

I eat pork. I like bacon. I like ham. I'm not into the whole hog jowl thing and I think those pork skins are disgusting whether their spicy or not. And it is just plain gross that someone would set down to eat some pickled pig's feet.

The Apostle Paul & Barnabas met with the church elders in Jerusalem to decide on this matter of whether these converts who were not Jewish should keep the Jewish laws and ceremonies (including circumcision) and this was thier decision...

"For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay no greater burden of Jewish laws on you than to abstain from eating food offered to idols and from unbled meat of strangled animals, and, of course, from fornication. If you do this, it is enough. Farewell." Acts 15:27-29 (TLB)

Deuteronomy is from the Hebrew Torah (the book of laws) containing the laws that oblige all Jews. Although Christianity developed out of Judism the Gentile Christians are not and were never obliged to follow the dietary laws.

In the Book of Acts, Jesus come to one of the Disciples and shows him all the animals both clean and unclean, he says " Arise and eat, do not consider unclean what I call clean".

This demonstrates a separation from Judaic law into the freedom of Christianity.. The image of the food is both real and figurative.. For in the day Hebrews totally separated themselves from other people.. Christianity states in 1Corinthians Chapter Five,,,, For God has given us the ministry of reconciliation, reconciling man to himself". and by further implication each group of people being reconciled to each other,, but only under the rules he has established.

So now I don't have a problem with my sausage and gravy, or bacon and eggs,, And I thank God for pork chops daily... Let's have a hand for the hog....

It is not a sin for Christians to eat pork. The dietary restrictions were given to the Jews - not the Christians. I not only eat pork, but I LOVE bacon, thank you very much!!

I really like it when someone digs around for something to stump believers with - this one is really tough - I mean if I eat pork, do I have the right to call myself a Christian - I am completely stumped! Out of curiosity, and for the sake of my salvation, is bacon pork? What about ham, is that pork? Or is it just pork chops?

Answer - because, or, why not?

What you are talking about is the Old Testament law. Jesus came to fulfill the law. We are no longer under the law, but under grace. We are no longer, as Christians, obligated to keep the law which said that pork was not lawful to eat.

Its the whole new testimate old testimate thingy.
What I don't get is why they still go on their rants about Homosexuals, abortions ( or I should say paying the father about enough for a cheap hotel room to go make another), etc that are all old testimate too.
I guess picking and choosing is the key ( a lot of them even have worked on the sabbath in blatant violation of the commandments and claim to be christians)

God Himself changed that:

Acts 10:9 On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:

10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,

11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:

12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.

14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.

15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

16 This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.
