Ephesians 6:21 Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing. 22 I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage you. 23 Peace to the brothers, and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.
Hebrews 11 is a great chapter.
Its all about FAITH! Faith the size of a mustard seed is all we need. Even Thomas doubted.. henceforth the phrase "Doubting Thomas".
Matthew 6:33 have him read this passage and cling to it.

1 Samuel 30:6 "......David encouraged himself in the Lord his God." Sometimes there is no one to encourage you in life and so you must learn to encourage yourself. Reading the Psalms is a great place to receive encouragement. Knowing all the trials other Saints have been through but endured victorious to the end, helps when your down. Look at how Job endured and was rewarded double at the end of his suffering. The "Hall of Faith" in Hebrews chapter 11 is a great place to read and meditate on also. God is real, God is true, God is good, God is love, God is light and God never leaves us nor forsakes us! Our future in God is bright, our past in God is forgiven, our present in God is faith's hope and victory! God Bless.

Wow, I gotta say reading alan's simple advice (listen) and then the next one with the "Pray pray pray" advice I can see where this would be a tough call. I like Alan's advice but then again I can see where the belief that everything's black and white and that your friend needs, for whatever reason, to be on the same spiritual path as you could lead you to believe you have any control over your friend at all. You really don't. Be a friend.

Doubt is part of faith. It happens to all of us at one time or another. I am a believer in Satan's existance also and know from my own experience that he likes to deceive us with his lies. Not long ago, a fellow Christian helped me at a time when I was discouraged by some of the nonsense that the world throws at me. He suggested I read and meditate on Psalm 91 to remind me of who God is. Suggest that to your friend. My prayers will be with him also.

The best thing you can do is PRAY, PRAY, PRAY. It is a normal part of faith to go through seasons of doubt. I spent many years as an atheist, before returning to God. Continue to support him and share your love. It may be that there is something deeper that is troubling your friend, something he is afraid to share. The is why we must always pray for the things we don't know.

Well I definitely like Psalms, they are very soothing and comforting to your soul.
Proverbs is another good book.
I'm sure you'll find at least one thing to encourage him in any one of these two books or another book that you so choose to use.
