Wow, notice how strong some of the answers are in accusing those who claim near death experiences are 'liars, crazy, insane' etc. Those are strong assertions on a subject presumably no one knows the answer to...
Anyway the question was about who has claimed this, so a great place to see a lot of first hand accounts is http://www.near-death.com
To admit my own bias, I am a person of faith and I believe in an afterlife, so much of the common details of near death experiences makes great sense to me, though I don't claim to know one way or the other. The subject has been well researched in many scientific double blind studies (though it is not proven) and perhaps most telling of all is how similar nearly all of the near death experiences are.
I have only ever heard of one account of a negative near death experience (in other words the guy went to hell) whereas the vast majority of other near death experiences are positive.

There have been thousands of reported instances where people claim to have left their dead bodies and proceeded to another level that they interpret to be heaven or hell. These experiences have often caused life changing decisions to be made so they are very real to the individual. However, science says that their may be other reasons a person might experience such things...lack of oxygen to the brain, imbalance of brain chemicals etc. But, on the other hand, science has not been able to explain the instances where people have actually witnessed their own body being operated on, treated, brought back to life etc. from another vantage point. (Usually above the scene itself). There now, I have tried to give you both sides.

anyone who is alive has by definition never been dead. If you could die and then "undie", then the concept would be worthless. So people haven't seen the real afterlife, just something else. As to what it is, glimpse of heaven, brain going weird under stress, who the hell knows.

There was a book in Wal-Mart by a Baptist who claimed that he was dead for 90 minutes then came back. I don't remember his name. He didn't say he saw hell, but he said he saw some of his dead relatives. I'm not saying I believe him, that's just his claim.
There is another man I have seen that said he was dead, and the doctors asked him why he is not still dead, and he said he did not know anything while he was dead.

I don't believe in hell. I know of cases people have had out of body or near death experiences. None involved visiting hell-all were positive.
