I think that she looks like a Pit mixed with Mastiff, Bull Mastiff, Boxer, or Great Dane (because of the intense brindling). I think that the previous owner either got scammed or fed you a line to sell the dog. She is really cute though!

Oh she is just gorgeous. Don't let anyone, especially the media, convince you that these dogs are bad. Their temperment is just as you described and more: Calm, gentle, loyal, affectionate, love to cuddle, highly intelligent, easy to train- these are just some of the adjectives that fit for the breed. She may very well be a purebred American Bulldog. I think you got a great deal whether she is purebred or not.
"Pit Bull" is actually descriptive of three different breeds: The American Bulldog, The Staffordshire Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier, more commonly referred to as American Pit Bull Terrier, though all are often called that.
In any case, you have a gorgeous dog.
There is no way to know if the seller ever saw papers. Does it matter? She's beautiful and I know you will get very very attached to this dog. Just be sure and take her to obedience classes to get her socialized and used to being around other dogs and people.
I have three dogs and one is a Staff mix, mostly Staff and also brindle but a lighter color with some faint tiger striping. She is such a sweet affectionate dog.
Congrats.
"Petey" from the little rascals was a pit bull dog. So was Sue, "The Crocodile Hunter's" dog.
They have a lot of strength and stamina and do good in agility and other challenging sports.
Here's a great link to get you started on the truth about the type of dog you have:

Here are the things I do know.
She's adorable. And she looks VERY healthy.
I don't know a lot about Am. Bulldogs, but I like to think that I know a lot about dogs - I raise, train and exhibit show dogs in confirmation and obedience events. All breeds have what we in the fancy call a "type." And loosely put, this is the general characteristics that are common across a specific breed, usually appearing so for a specific purpose - based on what the breed are created for.
Looking at the pictures of your darling baby, she doesn't exhibit this type for either APBT nor the American Bulldog. In fact, if I were to be shown the picture of her saying on the couch, and not be able to see the brindle, I would probably assume that she was a lab.
What really makes me doubt her status as either of these "bully breeds" is her lack of pronounced cheek. She also appears to have very smooth skin over most of her muzzle, though her lips appear a little loose.
In Canada, purebred means registered, without exceptions - enforcable by their law. When I sell puppies for pet or show, the puppies are registered by us as the breeders with the AKC at NO ADDITIONAL COST to the buyer. A reputable breeder should not increase the cost because of registration papers. The litter I recently bred cost about $60 to register the litter of eight puppies, including 3 generation litter pedigrees for the puppy buyers. This provides the breeder with the papers to register the puppies individually, it doesn't actually register any of the dogs, just the litter. Then, the cost was $15 per puppy for registration, plus I think $18, if we wanted "official" three generation pedigrees, which are needed if we wanted to register the dogs in Canada. What I'm getting at here, is that the cost for registration is MINIMAL, so there is NO REASON to charge such a ridiculous *extra cost* for registration papers. And from what I understand, the costs are quite similar for UKC registrations, which should be the registering body for American Bulldogs. Anyhow, that was probably more information than any of you wanted.
*shrug* I have no definant answer for you. And in truth, you'll probably never know. I'm sorry that someone *probably* lied to you. I'm just glad that you were able to give her a great home and someone to love her.
And one more thing, if someone in the US is trying to sell you a *purebred* puppy, make sure that the registration papers are PROVIDED to you and are with the AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB or the UNITED KENNEL CLUB. There are many *new* registries out there that look good on paper but mean nothing. I have actually seen registeries for *new breeds* were if you come up with the breed, you get to name it yourself. The breeds registered by the AKC and UKC have a long history and have documentation on what makes them a *registerable* breed. I personally recommend if you want a purebred dog to inquire with the AKC or the UKC for breeder referrals for a reputable breeder who does appropriate health testing so that you are getting the best possible dog you can. Any dog can be loved and cared for, but if you are looking for something specific, which is why many people want a purebred dog, people shouldn't take advantage of you.
Again, good luck with your little (who weights more than my full grown dogs) lady. She looks like such a doll. I'm certain that I would fall in love with her:)

She is definately a pitbull. I currently have 3 pits and by the pics, she looks as if she will be on the bigger side. My male is 1 yr and already 80 lbs so good luck! Also you can take her to the vet and they can do blood work to find out the breed of her.

She looks like either a mix of American Bulldog and something or she's a Pitbull. Pure-bred American Bulldogs usually cost more than $100 dollars also. They usually cost about $500-$700 dollars, either way....she is adorable.

Ahhhhh, she is beautiful!!!!! You're right, I don't see any Bulldog in her. Does resemble a pit. She is a keeper though!!!! My daughter has pits and if raised right they are very protective and affectionate. I think the previous owner lied to you a couple of times. I don't know why people think they have to lie!!

Definately a mutt, very cute. She may have some bully breed in her but she is difinately not a pure bred. You can tell by her snout features, it is to long, and her body (it's hard to tell right now since she is a pup) is a not the build of a gladiator breed. I agree that she looks as though she may have hound in her.
