Yes, teaching is one of the best jobs a spouse can have. She won't be able to transfer, but she shouldn't have a problem finding a job.

The DoDEA schools are slowly closing down the DDESS (domestic) schools, so that's why a transfer isn't feasible. Even if she were to work for DoDDS (overseas schools), she still wouldn't be eligible for a transfer because she'd be considered a "local" hire (assuming you get married). Only CONUS hires can apply for a transfer (and they are EXTREMELY hard to get and aren't where you want to go).

Long story short, she won't have a problem getting a teaching job stateside. It won't necessarily be on a base, but it will be within the local community. For overseas, if she wants to be with you, you would need to get married. There's very little chance that an CONUS hire would end up the same place as you.

Have her check out this website so she can see what is required and what opportunities are available to her within the DoD system:
http://www.dodea.edu/

If you do get married, her best bet is to just apply when you get overseas (if you do get stationed there). With so many schools closing worldwide, they just aren't hiring that many CONUS applicants. Besides that, it just makes economic sense to hire a local hire rather than pay to transfer a teacher from another country. I saw that a lot when I was teaching overseas, especially for mid-year hires. She may have to start out as a sub, but chances are she'll get called nearly every day.

My husband is military and I have a degree in education. I'm not currently working, but I'd have no problem getting a job if I wanted to. It is really easy to get a teaching job in most places.

She won't necessarily always be able to teach in the military schools though. The DoD schools are usually really hard to get jobs in. If she did teach there, it is possible to transfer, but only if you move to another base with DoD schools. Most on-base schools are now under the jurisdiction of the local school districts. Eventually, I think they are going to move all state-side schools to the control of the local school board. In that case, you can't transfer to another school, obviously. But honestly, it's usually not hard to get a teaching job in the local area. A lot of military spouses are teachers, and the constant influx of military families means that there are always kids in schools in military towns, so they always need teachers. I think teaching is a good career for military spouses, as the schedule works well with the military member's schedule, especially if you have children.

I have a couple of friends who are teachers. The biggest problem they have getting teaching jobs is meeting individual state requirements for teachers. Of the 4 I know here in CT only 2 taught in the public schools and they mostly substitute. 1 of those finally got state qualified and took a full time job just about the time she moved. The others taught in private schools.

I'd highly recommend your girlfriend look into a National certification if you're going to be moving stateside often. It's more work and cost to get it but means you have to do less work in each individual state to get qualified.

Foreign countries are always looking for teachers especially for English. Contact the US Embassy in the country you are going to and ask if they have any positions open or can refer your gf to a good place to work. Don't forget that a lot of parents hire private teachers to home-school or to tutor their kids. This can be a very comfortable situation if the country is one that is in an uproar. Best of luck to the both of you!!

i dont know totally what I can tell you is she might well find her qualifications are going to pretty much useless in the UK, so unless she is teaching in a DODS school or if she has the quals to teach English as a 2nd language then going out the USA is not going to be great work wise for her.

Regards
