It was still a secret, because reading it would lead you to see the NT as a contradictory fairy tale..

Yes, it could be.

Bible reading wasn't allowed to the layman until the time of the Guentberg Press and Luther and his Bible.

But that's not what the Inquistions were about.

A large part of it was in Spain with the Jews and other Heretics. The Muslims, etc.

In France and German it was about those who challenged Papal authority.

One Catholic Priest wanted Martin Luther burned at the stake for what he was doings.

The ONLY thing that saved Luther was that the younger German Princes and Barrons were tired of kissing the Pope's ring and wanted to see if somone could CHALLENGE the dominace of the Church.

Luther was a good test case so they looked the other ways, got people to help Luther, knew who he was but let him go and pretended they didn't recognize him.

They allowed him a CHANCE to grow a foundation.

And it worked.

Between the Muslims, Henry the VIII and Luther and Calvin, the Byzantine Empire lost almost 40% of it's following between 1450 and 1600.

And without firing a shot.

At one point (around 1000 AD) the Byzantine ruled 75% of the known world and by 1600 it only ruled 33% and that as remained right up until today. Only 1/3 the world is Catholic. Once upon a time most of it was.

Today the Protesants (reformists) and Musilms split 1/3 the word. The Protestants and Catholics together claim almost half the world, which is why the Catholcs are courting the Protestants.

It forced the Catholics to take a new approach.

One thing was letting people read the Bible and in their Own language.

But that still has nothing to do with the Inquistions, which was a church by church, provience by provice vendetta thing by the local Cardinals and Bishops who used thier power to assult anyone, including a King if he were foolish enough say something off colored.

It was started because of people who read the Bible for themselves and saw that the teachings of the Catholic Church were against the real teachings in the Bible.
They called these people heretics and tortured and killed them. In order to slow down the amount of "heretics" they decided to ban people from studying for themselves and were required to have a priest interpret and teach the scripture to them.

In essence, they killed the true Christians that were intelligent enough to see the error taught by the Catholics.
Later on, over 300 years, Jews became victims also.

What is ironic is that we Christians were persecuted by the inquisition, and now we are blamed for it for by others.

Largely, the Church wanted the keep the Bible in Latin so as to reinforce the power of the priests. Since Latin was far from common knowledge at that time, many people could not read the scriptures themselves. They relied on priests to educate them on the word.
