Do auto insurance companies do checks on you (accidents, valid license, etc.) when you go to apply for insurance whether its over the phone or online?

Yes they do, this the the way that insurance company can have an idea of the kind of risk you represent to them.

Yes, that is what your premium is based on. When you go to renew, they will check again.
