ok, I am preparing to install two 18" DVC 1800watt subs and two Drive Gear 500watt 6x9 8-way speakers in my 1989 Lincoln Towncar, I am thinking of installing the subz in the trunk and the speakers in the driver/passanger door, any suggestions for better places??? My real question is what kind of amp should I get, how many watts, should i get two? And how many channels should the Amp be....And, will I need to get an extra battery or two or five or will It be all good, if so what kinda voltage battery, links are very helpfull, thanks.

You will need to get a capacitor for the set up cause you will need it to help support the battery. You shouldn't need to change batteries but if you do I'd go with Optima's red or yellow top brands. You will probably have to put those 18s in the trunk but they should sound good in there. And the type of amp you need depends on the speaker specs...Are they 2 or 4 ohm? and is the 1800 peak or RMS power? From the info you have given, I'd say use 2-2000 watt amps (One for each sub) but you probably can use a 2000 watt (or bigger) 2 channel amp but they won't hit to the best of their ability since they are 1800 watt subs.

I'll help with the Alternator.

If you assume you 100% efficiency (This is OK for this application) this should work. power is P=IV

(I) is current and (V) is voltage. You know voltage, I think is it 14 volts running. Measure it to be sure. You know P, add up the Ps.

P=14(I)

Solve for I;

It is an equation so you have to do the same thing to both sides for it to stay equal. Divide both sides by 14.

P/14 = I

This is what kind of alternator you need. I would get some capacitors and you will not need to design for peak and your voltage will not drop when the speakers pound hard. With the capacitors you can multiply the peak by 0.707 and it may be cheaper.

Remember the 0.707 is only for Alternator spec and not amplifier.

...one last thing, P is in Watts. But make sure you are using the watts or you will overbuild the Alternator.

Something to consider...this is an example...

To calculate the current draw of an amplifier, multiply the total RMS watts by 2 to account for amplifier inefficiency (We'll say 1000 watts X 2 = 2000 watts), then divide by the average output voltage of an alternator, 13.8 volts (2000 divided by 13.8 = 145 amps). Since the average music signal requires about 1/3rd of the average power in a test tone, divide by 3 (145 amps divided by 3 = 48 amps).

This is an average approximation of current draw and it can go higher. So I would gather between *48 and 72 amperes for this example.

The alternator of a:

compact car is about 35 amps
mid-sized car is about 65-75 amps
SUV is about 145 amps

Calculate 40% of the amperes of the alternator you have now. This is the average current the car uses when running. Add this number to the approximate average current draw (*48), and you will come up with the mimimum average current required to power the audio system and vehicle. I would recommend going with the next highest rated alternator you can find or more accurately, multpily the final calculation by 1.3 for the alternator amperage required.

you probably dont need an extra battery but a capacitor is a must so it doesn't drain your battery, there are a ton of amps that will work with that set up, and the places you put them are up to you but the the trunk for subs is the easiest

appears like a undesirable floor... examine your connections and grounds, ought to be the restoration! desire this helped! btw additionally, i hate to confess it yet you wasted any cent you payed on your caps there extremely no longer doing something.... the standards for a cap are the comparable standards for an amplifier to get the voltage it needs so its extremely pointless, espcailly in the actuality which you have a redtop battery you dont ought to take any rigidity off that battery its meant for use then recharged.
