Props to Amrit - unfortunately, your best bet is to just try again from the start.

If something went screwy and you tried to just install WinXP over something else (older version of Windows) without formatting the hard drive, that's probably why it went sour - in my experience, Windows doesn't play nice with other operating systems, including other versions of itself.

If you have any important files on there, back them up. If you don't, skip to the next paragraph. You can use a LiveCD to have a working operating system just long enough to move those files to a jump drive, external hard drive, or another partition. The link I've included will give you an ISO image for Ubuntu Linux (don't worry, it's user friendly) - just burn the CD (using the image, don't just burn the file to CD), stick it in, and you'll be able to take care of everything else from there.

After any files you may have are backed up, be sure to format the hard drive as NTFS (to be safe, don't use the "fast" option), and give it another go.

Best of luck!

Edit: Sorry, I forgot the link. Here it is:

I would suggest to start from the scratch again, but in the following sequence.
First reformat hard disc, then boot from CD, and install windows XP, when it ask for the first restart, you restart, and exectly the same time, change your boot from CD, to hard drive, and let it proceed as normal. This is the time when windows boots from hard drive for the further installation of XP, Continue as useual, it still takes files from the cd, but continues installation, until you finish installation.
smile, its done.!!

This: "i even have a crap load of viruses on it and adware" "it probably the adware and viruses" Sounds to me adore it probably too overdue to do whatever however structure and rebuild. Whatever you do, get a few Anti-virus program. A unmarried virus may also be terrible to not point out "a crap load". Not being in a position in addition in nontoxic mode kinda guidelines you can also already be watching at principal OS drawback. You can take a look at booting off your Windows CD and attempting a fix or putting in the OS on an extra partition. You would ought to seem up how to try this in case your no longer certain. Either means, be in a position to put in virus program instantly should you get it up and strolling. If you do not, you're going to surely simply re-contaminate your approach (until you structure, on the way to delete the whole lot). Good good fortune.

Could be an unsuccessful XP install. Can you access the Recovery Console or boot to command prompt at all? If you can try to access your boot.ini file of your system partition--probably C:\. Your boot.ini file should point to the boot disk. It should look like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

If you get to command prompt. CD to Windows\system32 folder and type "edit" (without the "") at the prompt. It will open the old DOS editor. Edit your boot.ini to read like the above, if C: is the drive. I repaired an XP install like this once.

seems that xp installation did not complete. Only first time when you are booting from the disk, you have to press a key , after that it reboots several times , but does not boot from cd, you should not press a key during successive reboots otherwise it will start all over again.

Totally start from scratch. Boot to the CD and do it all again.

Welcome to the world of Windows.
