Do you want to learn martial arts or self defense? If you want to learn a martial art then forget the home study course and find a reputable school to attend. If you want to learn self defense, you can learn a great deal from a home study courses. You can learn about awareness and avoidance as well as about risky behavior and how to identify potential threats. You can learn how to read body language and you learn simple do's and don't when confronted.

However when you come the physical part of self defense, you need some training with a knowledgeable instructor.

Good luck

I can't recommend any home-study courses in the martial arts.

The easiest way to get better at self defense is to train with a partner. Self-defense tactics are fairly easy to learn on your own if you stick to kicks and punches. But if you want to learn grappling/wrestling skills, you must have a partner. To learn strategy (sparring, distancing, etc.) you also need a partner.

Having said that, there is something you can do at home by yourself. You can practice boxing skills, and maybe some kicks, with a heavy bag. It's possible to learn all the basic punches and combinations by yourself (although you'll train more efficiently and with better results if you have a coach). You can also do strength and flexibility exercises, either with weights or with calisthenics.

Your best option is to carry a weapon. Look into the legal ramifications of arming yourself; you should do it legally for peace-of-mind.

You cant have a home study course of something that requires two people. Self defense is something you really need experienced instruction on. You wont learn anything at home. find a good school. Happy training!

You can teach yourself a lot with DVD's and tapes provided you have a sparring partner. Grappling is fairly easy to pick up on with a partner but you will need differnet body types and sizes eventually because everything is a little bit different based on physiology. Get out in the back yard and box. You can learn a lot like that too. Not the safest thing in the world but it will toughen you up and teach you a lot.

Only as an extension on an existing knowledge would I suggest using them. having the background will ensure that it supplements your abilities. as a first taste, without proper guidance you may get hurt trying it out on the street.

BUT, I have found some useful things that dont get taught in the dojo, so I am all for them as curiosities that can boost your deviancy.

look down the left for products/dvds

I have the Widowmaker one, and it was great stuff that I was never taught, even when I was taught the ultimate in cruel attacks.

self defense home study's are bad!! stay away from them.
1. you can never really be sure that you are doing them correctly.
2. it takes more than 1 person.
3. if you really want to do self defense, join up w/ a local dojo and train properly there.

It doesn't work. Good reference but it still doesn't replace being put in front of an opponent. It's amazing how fast you learn.
