If you are targeting schools in US then a good MCAT score will be necessary, or if you are in a country where there are competitive entrance exam you need to scaore well in entrance exam. For good score prepare well for the exam. Also get community service experience, have strong profile and leadership experience in school and premed years.
In Canada you need to have min 40 hours of community service and gat good grades.
You need to target your studies and strategy based on the target college and hence research on the schools.

First of all be in touch with the books contantly if you are preparing for exams......get a good idea about the books and get a good orientation of everything ......read it with understanding..becuase the medican test includes these books basically, they jusy turn the question in some other direction but if you have a understanding of the topic you would pick it....!they don't ask question which is out of course!
Go for some centers which offer the prepartion for entry test ! they would make you practise the format of the test !
And be in contact with the newspapers as well.becuase sometime the authorities give the format for the test!
And if you are in a country which do not follow the enterence test...then just relax and pray that you should get the admission !
All the best !

volunteer, communty service, forming a group that makes a difference in people lives...(getting corporate sponsors to help with meals on wheels...a clinic in a ghetto....) you have to be different...because everyone will say i want to be a doctor because i want to help people...every admissions committee has heard the line a million times...
i wanted to be a doctor so i could enable care in a rural part of Florida that had no access to any medical care for 76 miles...
