Make sure its safe before you try.But the best home remedy I've found, also relieves pain of sore throat. Is mixing Braggs Brown Unprocessed Vinegar(get at any health food store) mix 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons into 1/2 cup of water and gargle, although a bit strong but will NOT damage any tissues gargle as long as you can and spit it out-do Not swallow for as you gargle the vinegar is killing the bacteria and getting the jstuff out of throat which you do not want to swallow(although Braggs Vinegar and Honey mixture is great to drink and improves overall health) I usually gargle approx 5 times in a row several times throughout the day.You will notice that not long after your first gargle the stuff will start coming up from the chest/throat.Unless you also have a sore throat and/or chest congestion but if just stuff in throat esp in the morning when you wake it may be draining into throat from sinuses-my problem when I'm exposed to a lot of dust. The Bragg's is also great when sore throat with junk from flu-the latest all around me ill for weeks with scratchy throat etc BUT since I gargled throughout the day when throat felt uncomfortable only 21/2 days. There are some great suggestions already with the vapor rub and the shower. There is another way to clear out mucus. Add some crushed garlic to some chicken noodle soup. It works wonders, trust me.

Go into your bathroom and turn on your shower high, close the door and just let the steam get to your throat.it also helps if you put vicks vapor rub on while doing this. The steam and vapor will help loosen the congestion in your throat, you may have to cough a little to loosen it more, but it works for me all the time.

Use a cough drop to ease the irritation of your throat. Drinking plenty of water would help too.
