you can fly to chiang mai their are a few discount airlines that fly there. you can take the bus but don't list to that guy who told you to take it from Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekamai) you need to go to the Northern Bus Terminal Phaholyothin Road. You can also take the train from Hua Lampong station on Rama IV Road. Rent a Car, if you have a license and a international license, hitch hike or walk.

Take the bus at Morchit northern bus terminal, deaprt at night say 21 - 22:00 and arrive Chiengmai in the morning. The second alternative is to take the train from Hua Lum Phong Railway station, also leave in the evening and arrive in the morning, take more time than bus.
The fast and easiest is by plane, several airlines leave new airport almost every hours and take only 55 min. to Chiengmai. By the time you arrive Bangkok, the old airport will be in operation for all domestic flights. You can choose whether you want to fly lowcost airline or full service airline like Thai Inter.
The last alternative is to rent a car from Bangkok and drive there, I did last 2 months round trip from Bangkok to Chiengmai, Mae Hong Sohn - Sukhothai - Bangkok , total 2500 km. Fun, real fun to see many tourist attractions along the way.

Take a bus. I wasn't aware there is a plane, but even so, if you took one it would take the same amount of time if you factor in checking in etc. and cheaper. There are little travel companies all over, just walk down the street and they'll set you up. It's only a few hours by bus and the busses are quite clean and nice and you'll meet people. If you need to find a travel place, they are all over Koh San (not sure on the spelling) road where the backpackers stay.

Just to confirm - the others are correct - the bus from Ekkamia will not go to CM - you must go to the bus station at Mochit - any taxi driver will know Mochit.. the vip busses are very nice and you can figure about 9 hours with a stop for food.. keep your tkt - it is good for lunch..
or take the plane..
if you have time, there are nice stops to make along the way..
good luck
