I am not Mormon bashing here. I am simply trying to educate myself about the LDS faith. Lots of religious leaders claim to converse with God but none seem to know how to make a Prophecy. Wouldnt it have been nice if God told one of His "Prophets" about 9-11, or the 2004 Tsunami or Hurricane Katrina? Usually they just make up some lame excuse that their job is to lead or teach instead of making Prophecies. Or when they do make a Prophecy it is so vague or generalized that it could mean just about anything.

I saw Gordon Hinkley on 60 minutes being interviewed by Miuke Wallace and he was asked about the Mormon doctrine that God was once a man just like us who evolved into being a God. Gordon Hinkley said "I dont know that we teach that" and "Thats just a couplet" when asked about the saying "As God is , we will become, and as we are now God once was" . So, If Hinkley cant make Prophecies and doesnt even know what the church teaches, how did he make it as "Prophet".

No he has not and there has not been a prophecy made by the so called moromon prophets for years and years. You can get a copy of the DOctrine and covenants, which shows when the last one was made. Also you can read about the prophecies that says God commanding the Mormons to take many wives, and also the one that says you can drink tea and coffee and the one that says that black people cant hold the priesthood, and all there other beliefs as well. No Christian leaders claim to converse with God, the prophets of the bible are all that christians believe in, and for some reason the mormons think that having a prophet makes them better.

Why the need to prophecy when science has been warning the people about Katrina for long enough? From my memory, that is one of those distasters that was just waiting to happen. The same is with a large earthquake in the Utah area. That hasn't happened yet, but it is spoken about every now and then. Call it prophecy (it was spoken about ever since Brigham Young's day--look at the dedicatory prayer of the Salt Lake temple) or just plain science (we now know that we are sitting on a fault line and the next large earthquake which comes will be 8.0 or higher, and it's not a matter of if it comes but when it comes), but that is something that is going to happen and which we've been warned to prepare for for a long time.
The prophets have always warned us to be prepared for a disaster. Whether it be because of a lost job or a natural disaster, it is just a wise thing to do. This is just a physical thing. Most of the prophecies are of a more spiritual nature, though, and are there to bless us spiritually and to help us protect ourselves spiritually.

Yes. Look, the day of the terrorist attack in Spanin happened, the mormon chorus was going to have a presentation exactly where the attacks were going to happen and about the same time it was going to happen. Just a few hours (or minutes) before the attacks Gordon B. Hinkley called and said that the presentation must be cancelled, he a reletation.
He said about Katrina too. Sorry if I'm not clear enough but english is not my 1st language

Hmm, if you want a sort of prophecy made recently, I would say that he did indeed predict his approximate life span, that people had expected him in a recent General Conference talk to be bidding a final farewell, as if his death was imminent (this was about a year or so ago). He declared that such was not the case, that he expected to definitely be around for the next General Conference. And that happened. We actually have a great number of latter-day prophecies that are just waiting to happen, so they don't need to be rehashed. In addition, if someone had specifics on every small and medium and large event that was going to happen, it might interfere with people's free agency. For example, if someone prophesied that the East and West Coast of Canada - or the United States - was going to be bombed by some foreign country, people who believed that would possibly abandon everything and move into the center of the country. If the foreign country got wind of how everyone was moving, they might change their tactics and decide to attack the center of the country. Our job is to study the latter-day prophecies we already have, and listen to the Prophet for any additional information which may clarify what needs to be done.

When there were only about 30 temples in the world, President Hinkley announced a building program that would reach at least 100 temples in his life time. Ten years later there are about 130 temples completed.

Gordon B. Hinckley: Now we don’t need a lot of continuing revelation. We have a great, basic reservoir of revelation. But if a problem arises, as it does occasionally, a vexatious thing with which we have to deal, we go to the Lord in prayer. We discuss it as a First Presidency and as a Council of the Twelve Apostles. We pray about it and then comes the whisperings of a still small voice. And we know the direction we should take and we proceed accordingly.

Sure, everytime there is a new temple announced, that is revealtion from the Lord. Every time a new program, such as the Perpetual Education Fund, is started, that is direct revealtion.
I think you might be confusing "prophecy" with "prediction" or "future telling". Prophecy can also be called "Revealtion"...
Revelation is communication from God to His children. This guidance comes through various channels according to the needs and circumstances of individuals, families, and the Church as a whole. When the Lord reveals His will to the Church, He speaks through His prophet. Prophets are the only people who can receive revelation for the Church, but they are not the only people who can receive revelation. According to our faithfulness, we can receive revelation to help us with our specific personal needs, responsibilities, and questions and to help us strengthen our testimony.

You mentioned Tsunami's and Hurricane Katrina... after those disasters happened, President Hinckley assured us it was not a "punishment" for those people, it was not God "acting out" or whatever. And I believe him, although those disasters were awful and devistating, it gave chance for SO many people to give selflessly and give service. We live on earth and therefore are subject to "earthly" things - sickness, disasters, temptation, death...but we also get to experience love, compassion, charity, happiness...
Who says a prophet has to constantly be "predicting" disasters anyways?
I have a suggestion, if you want to know about the LDS church, speak with some missionaries, visit the church, go to mormon.org or LDS.org, PRAY to your Heavenly Father, read the Book of Mormon.
Good luck.

Regarding natural disasters, it has been a very rare occurance to say "on such and such a day, there will be a tsunami of epic proportions, so get out or start living right". If you are really a student of LDS thought, you know that while we, the living mourned (and mourned greatly) over the victims of 9/11 and the Tsunami in SE Asia, we also believe in life after death, eternal families and marriage, as well as free will...God cannot restrain a person from acting in a manner which he has predetermined. God cannot make you be good. So while it is true that there was great suffering (and will be more...just watch!) we cannot make bad people stop being bad...neither can God. We provide comfort, we provide support, we provide shoulders to cry on.

Regarding Hurricane Katrina, however, I am told that the Stake President of New Orleans told all the members of the stake to get out. (Stake is like a dioces.) There were a few families who didn't, or who were unable to evacuate and they suffered greatly.

As for President Hinckley and whether he is a "true prophet"...this is really a subjective question. Do you believe it? Just because I do, doesn't mean you do. Do you need to believe it? If you are asking this question because you need to have the faith to believe in him as a "true prophet" you need to get on your knees and ask God.

As to "what" has he prophesied...check out the Official Proclamation to the Family. While it doesn't really say "on such and such a day, such and such event will affect such and such people.." but it does very strongly say what needs to happen to families in order for them to stay strong. And you read this, you see that without a strong family, society is starting to crumble. The Muslims have strong families and they are strong. We don't. We are getting weaker every day. It's not good, my friend.

Gordon B Hinckley warns, chastizes, encourages, leads. And if you care to head his words, you will find your life will be better.

Go to lds.org and check out the General Conference addresses given by him.

direct revelations could be interpreted by many ways evne through dream. though im no prophet i do have the experiences of having dreams before it happens and thats my answer to revelations. i know many people who may have had personal revelations before things have happened. i have the gift of discernment. whenever i go somewhere and i feel a bad spirit i dont feel comfortable until i leave. sometimes its likely something bad is going to happen or happening.
many mormons i know have those same feelings about certain things and it kept them safe from harm.i suggest for you to do more reading and studying of your own.suggestion

In 1995 Gordon B. Hinkley read "The Proclamation on the Family"

read it all here: http://www.lds.org/library/display/0,4945,105-1-11-1,00.html

I believe there is a future prophesy that we are seeing come true today in the part that says " We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets."

Families are definitely disintegrating, and communities are paying the social consequences.

I see no reason you will possibly prefer to be condescending and impolite. besides the shown fact that, that's advantageous to ask questions or ask your self approximately why, a church consistent with revelation, might purchase some thing that grow to be a fraud. apparently sufficient, I extremely have slightly extra perception into this. My neighbor is a church historian for the Mormon church, and has been for a while. In his place he deals with historical documents etc. whilst the church grow to be offered with the documents by utilising Mr. Hoffman my neighbor grow to be the guy who authenticated the documents and suggested those above him of their genuineness. So, basically as in the different company, the leaders in the church count upon others and their abilities and occupation. It grow to be the err of my neighbor getting dupped by utilising Mr. Hoffman; because of the fact of his advice the church offered the documents. The Mormon church is a church of the persons besides as of God. which ability, that besides the actuality that there is a prophet that leads the church and gets revelation from God (so they proclaim) there is likewise super reliance and have faith in its contributors. God would not basically hand all people the solutions or intervene with each and every factor or our lives, otherwise he could be doing away with the loose company which we so importantly won as a consequence of the alternative in the backyard of Eden. the alternative to purchase the letters grow to be based on the opinion of a lay guy or woman and the representation of a con guy. that's it. there is not any reason to make plenty extra of it. Does my neighbor prefer to speak approximately it? No, i think of that's been some thing that has stressed him for an prolonged time, yet he keeps to do what he does terrific, be a historian. all of us make blunders and that i certainly do no longer choose somebody to hold mine over my head. sturdy success and God bless.

Don't you think that perhaps there's a reason why God would not tell anyone about such disasters? I mean, perhaps He allows such things to happen so that WE can show our potential to help our fellow man.

Prophecy is not for such things, anyway, but for those things that involve our eternal salvation.
