I have the money, but I want to know if the Desert Eagle handgun is worth the money. Is it a dumb investment, I am looking for people who have or do own one please. You are welcome to put your 2 cents in but please note that I want the people who have owned one. Thanks :)

MMMMMmmmmm....
You might wanna shop around.
1700.00 is about 500.00 too stiff a price for a Desert Eagle.
...Even if it's the gold-titanium tiger-striped one.
(Yes, they make one. They also offer overall gold plating.)
Shotgun News publishes a yearly list of FFL dealers who will order guns for you at generally about 15% above wholesale cost. Being as wholesale on these cannons is about 995.00, 1700.00 is not that great of a deal. You might wanna get a copy of that list, Man.
What do I think about 'em? 60% more muzzle energy than a .44magnum...., thats what! Serious big game hunting is possible with the .50AE, and the Desert Eagle has proven itself to be the premire platform for this cartridge.
Large caliber magnums hold their value well. Look at the Smith and Wesson model 29. The .500 S&W magnum revolvers currently in production would be another excellent investment in this category.

The 45 ACP is not necessarily an engine stopping caliber, But it is a fine defensive handgun and a much better choice than the DE. While the DE has plenty of power it lacks in the ability to deliver a high rate of fire as the recoil is stout and follow up shots do not come quickly. Plus to get good with a handgun requires frequent practice and a diet of .50 AE will put a hole in your wallet almost as fast as simply shooting it. Meanwhile the .45 ACP is going to deliver quick follow up rounds on target as well as penetrate into a car with sufficient energy to disable targets on the inside and allow you to maneuver with ease. All this aside, pistols are fine but you may need a rifle for what you are talking about. The power out of a good rifle easily trumps most handguns and a good clip fed semi auto that you can shoot 1.5" at 100 yards versus 2-3" at 25 yards for the handgun, brings more to the fight than even a DE. At close ranges 15-25 yards that kind of precision pays off as most people can't seem to hit a target at 15 yds with a handgun all of the time. Just something to consider.

Gold Desert Eagle For Sale

I own the .44 mag. Desert Eagle. A friend owns the .50AE. I've tried the weapon out a couple times. Not a fun gun to shoot. Recoil is manageable, but just barely. Muzzle blast is bad enough that I wore ear plugs under my ear muffs. I was disappointed in the accuracy.
My .44, loaded with 22 grains of 2400 will push my 240 gr. jacketed soft nose at almost 1800 FPS. It will do so without beating me to death or deafening me.
The price you quote is high, even for the 50 AE. I think my buddy only paid about $1200 for his. I paid $700 for my .44. I think I am way ahead here.
Another point. Unless you reload, the 50 AE is almost a buck a round.

No 50cal is worth the purchase, I have read more then one test on 3 semi-autos and there are all plagued by the faults, the magazines drop from the mag-well do to heavy recoil.

If you really need a big semi-auto "Desert Eagle" take a look at the 357, 41 mag or the 44 mag.

I myself have never been a fan of the big autos, resale on the used market is about half to FFL and a privet party, GOOD LUCK.

I don't have one in my collection.

No, the $1700 pricetag is WAY high. Also although the .50AE is a nice round the .44 Mag is a better all around choice, cheaper, more real world usable, and easier to handload.

After being asked to shoot one at the local range, I would only take one if it were given to me. And that only long enough to sell to someone that wants a gun that sprays expensive bullets all over a target at 50 feet. That thing was heavy so recoil wasn't as bad as you would think and I'm sure the effects of a bullet that found its mark would be impressive. By the way, the reason I was asked to shoot it was that the owner could not get the sights adjusted. The sights were bottomed out and it was still shooting 6 inches high at 50 feet.

A friend of mine has one of the original ones. He's been trying to sell it for a while but not too hard. He paid like $1,600. for it new and can't get a thousand for it now.

He says it is fun to shoot but the ammo is high and he just doesn't have time to go to the range anymore. It is nearly too heavy and bulky to be practical, as he has 'other' handguns more adequate for personal/home defense.

If you want one and have the money then, more power to you. You can always trade down if it isn't your cup of tea.

Good luck.
