Try some gel. Or what I do is tie my hair down at night and in the morning pull it really tightly. Other than that all I can think of is to straighten it.

When you wear it down your hair has weight which actually "weighs" down your hair. Hope that makes sense to you. When you put you hair up in a pony tail it relieves some of that weight which may pull out some of the curl, which is why it puffs up. Because it is lighter. If you feel like you need to wear it it a pony tail put some sort of styling cream in it to help keep it tame and weighed down. (don't use mousse, many people w/ alot of hair make that mistake, mousse give the hair volume, which is not what you want)

lol....sounds like me,here's the tip:
a)use water, just a little on a brush and remember to brush the top, the bottom(the place by your neck) and the sides...brush it continuously and hold one hair on to your hair then wet your free hand and rub it to your hair smotthly inwards then do the final touch and brushing then using a elastic(preferably) tie your ponytail and your done
b)this is how it worked for me, but if it doesn't work then try using spray so it wont poof, hope it helps x_x
