I have a 2 1/2 year old black lab, and I want to get her the best dog food. The recent recalls and doggy deaths have made me more aware of my purchase. I've been feeding her Purina One dry dog food, I won't go near wet or canned dog food.

Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance!

Royal Canin is an excellent brand and was not on the recall list, neither its wet or dry food as it is not processed at Menu Foods. Any processing plant, human or animal food processing plant, can have an incident like this. It happened recently with Peter Pan Peanut Butter and has happened with other foods. But Royal Canin is one brand that is good that was not on the recall list and has dog food formulas designed for large active breeds.
Nature's Recipe is a brand that also is not processed thru Menu Foods, and it is also a good brand, their adult formula Venison and Rice, or Duck, or Rabbit, or fish blends are best for dogs that are prone to reacting to common dog food allergens like wheat and corn and don't handle chicken, beef or lamb well.
Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance is a bit more expensive and less easy to find but it is a very good food.
So is California Naturals.
Paul Newmans Own is an organic high end food available in some health food stores like Whole Foods.
There are many excellent brands that were not affected by this recall.

Do NOT feed Science Diet. It is full of cheap fillers like corn, sorghum, wheat, etc and by products. Find a food with no corn, wheat, soy, sorghum, by-products and only named meat sources (no mystery meats).

Here's some news for you folks. I have personally done diet studies on Purina's rodent chows (very similar in composition to the dog diets) and they don't even know what is going into the feed! Steer clear of anything Purina! (that also goes for Science Diet, Iams, Eukanuba, Pedigree, etc)

Good choices include Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Canidae, Innova, Blue Buffalo, Merrick, The Honest Kitchen, etc

Purina One is a favorite of mine too. My dogs get bored though after awhile so I switch it out with Pedigree and Beneful an Kibbles & Bits.

Sometimes, for special occasions, (weekends) I get them chicken livers and cook them in water and rice. They love it.

I can't imagine a dog food company that has such bad quality control. Many people lost their dogs. I think they are ruined.

There is no "best" dog food, but there is a best for your dog. Determining it is tough, however. Contact your vet for advice!!!

this is good one, let me tell u in my mother land ukraine/russia
dogs lived out side like they suppst to to protect the owner, unlike in america where they are literally worshiped........

there u feed them home cooked food, simples, "NATURAL"
MOST IMPORTANT it should be organic, cuz hear in america is hard to find ORGANIC FOOD i dont think dog food is natural , plus it cost money,

also left overs are very good, ur not wasting food and saving money, and feeding dog, so in mother land they could scare off a wolf, cuz they were very healthy............

I have always liked Science Diet. If you make a change make it gradually. You already know that, though.
