Dying the hair too often will ultimately damage/frizz it out, even if you dye it darker too many times per year. I do the roots every 5 weeks.
The rest gets done maybe twice a year. If my stylist does it in the salon she will only use 6% peroxide. If you lighten you probably use 20% (or 30% at most) which is why lightening is more damaging than making hair darker. Lifting color requires more powerful developers.

Bleach is awful for your hair, but you should always go 1-2 shades darker at a time. I've noticed that my hair always seems better after dying it, but over the years, I've realized that my hair has become thinner and a little more flat.
Try to be happy with your current hair color, because it really does damage your hair in the long run no matter what.

Yes going from one extreme to another will do your hair in. When ever coloring hair it will always damage your hair. Bleaching is the worst because you are using proxide and powder to lift the color up and out. When using dye it puts a layer on top of your hair so not too much damage happens. I hope I make sense.-L

ok....when you use a lightener (bleach) on your hair...it opens up the hair shaft...and causes the breakage...it takes the pigment in your hair that made it shine...had its natural color...and all that...when you dye it darker...you are putting the pigment back into your hair...dying it darker can damage it just as much depending on what developer you are using...so if you are only going darker..your best bet is using a 10 volume...no more than 20 volume developer...this will deposit your color with minimal damage...be careful what you use from a box at cvs..you never know what developer they have

going darker is no difference than lighter. i dyed my hair and it fell right off, so the best thing to do i recommended is to do a rinse, so that u can change colours if u want and NO damage to ur hair at all.
in the mean time think about it , if its something u really want to do.
good luck!

When you are going darker, you are just adding pigments to your hair. When you go lighter, you are taking away and stripping pigment, which can leave the hair more fragile and more easily damaged. Everything in moderation!

I really believe that dying your hair darker is better. I think that lightening it just strips your hair and makes it worse. ofcourse too much of anything is bad so you should dye your hair often.
