I'd say 14 or 15 would be a better age to start babysitting. I've babysat for kids who are 10 and trust me they needed it. They would have killed themselves had I not been there.
At 10 their just to clueless about what to do in emergency situations. And if the baby sitter panics the kid will panics too and nothing can be accomplished in that kind of atmosphere. If you want to babysit though talk with the people you'd be babysitting for. There are also many hospitals that teach special baby sitting classes on first aid for small child and babies. Ask your local hospital about them. When you complete the class you get a card or certificate saying that you are a certified baby sitter. You're supposed to get them renewed every year but I never have since the day I took the class. These classes are a great idea for any babysitter.

In general, sure. I started babysitting around 10 or 11, but just in the afternoon for kids around 5-8. I took a life saving course a few years later before I started babysitting for real young ones or late at night.

Note: there are a lot of 10 year olds who wouldn't be mature enough to do it. While I don't think it is fair to discount someone's maturity because of their age, I do think at 10 years you should be cautious and give them short, easy jobs first.

I don't think that a 10 yr old should be able to they are too young! they need the babysitter! i personally would never leave my kids with anyone that isn't at least 16!

Personally...it all depends. I was babysitting at that age, but just next door. And, I never baby sat past midnight at that age. I guess it all depends on the kid and how old are the ones the kid is watching.
I prefer the ones watching my kids to be at least 13 yrs old, which is the state law here, and to have some kind of experience or have taken the babysitting class from the redcross.

32 years ago when I was 10 I use to babysit several of the kids in our neighborhood...yikes. I know I was close to home and could get my parents quick if I had too, looking back, it was probably too young. As a mother of two kids....4 and 6 there is no way I would let a 10 year old baby sit them...

Of course not. A 10 year old should HAVE a babysitter, not be one. I can't imagine what kind of parent would hire such a young child to babysit. Well, yes I can imagine. It would be a very irresponsible one.

FYI--the guidelines are no less than 12...but I think that is EXTREMELY young for a sitter. I would never hire one that young. For parents here is the University of Michigan's guidelines on babysitters:

Babysitting if there is an adult in the house, perhaps. Babysitting alone. Never. A ten year old is still a small child themselves.
In most states and provinces, the legal age is 13.

I would say no, there is still a lot of maturing and learning that needs to go on past the age of 10, I would say wait until at least 12 depending on the child.....

No. At a minimum, 13. Asking so much responsibility of someone at 10 years of age is too much to ask for in my opinion.
