I eloped also. I mailed the announcements right after the ceremony. I think that it's only appropriate to send them AFTER the ceremony since you are making an announcement after the fact.
I didn't use a name in the return address, I just used the address.
The announcement included my maiden name so that people wouldn't be confused.
The announcement said something like:
John Smith and Jane Doe are thrilled to announce that we were united in marriage on July 21, 2001 at the Monterey Stone Chapel, in Monterey California.
Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials! Much joy to you and your fiancee'.

Wedding announcements should be mailed the day (after your ceremony) or the day after your wedding. I would just recommend you use your married name and ask a family or friend to mail them for you the day you plan to get married once the ceremony is over (that's what we did). You can still use wording to announce your wedding yourselves.
If you don't have anyone that can mail them for you. You can use your maiden name on the return address but add an at home message at the bottom or corner of your announcement (that's what we did):
Mr. and Mrs. Last Name at home
Date
Address

You do not want to put Mrs. with his last name yet. Some of the people you are sending the announcements to won't know who you are when they just look at the envelope. Besides, there's no need to be so formal with the announcement. Your first and last names, or use Ms. Or, just put the address with no names.

I would say do something like:
Mr. and Mrs. John Doe would like to announce that they were joined in holy matrimony on April #, 2007 in a private ceremony at Wherever.
Something like that would sound good. Also, when you look at announcements in books and on line, they have suggestions about how to word them.

If you're announcing that you have eloped and gotten married, I think its OK to address yourself as MRS. But if you're anouncing that you eloped and you will be getting married on a certain date then you should address yourself as MISS.
EX.:
Miss Sara Johnson
and
Mr. Robert Jones
wish to anounce to you all
that they have eloped
and will be wed on
Saturday, April 31, 2008
in Beautiful Hawaii.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Sara Jones
wish to annouce to you all
that they have eloped
and were wed on
Saturday, April 31, 2008
in Beautiful Hawaii.

I sent out my engagement announcements myself and what i put on the retun address was "my last name/his last name".
But to be honest you don't have to put either. I just orderd my wedding invitations and all of the returns just say my address on them with no name.

If you are taking his name, it should be Mrs. But I am not so sure you should mail them until you return. Anything could happen and then you have a big mess.
I would mail them whereever you are right after the ceremony. Have a glass of Champagne at the mailbox:)

It is simple, decide firmly when you are going to send them and then address them accordingly. Before the marriage (Miss) after the marriage (Mrs)
I personally would send them after and save yourself the stress...you have enough to worry about.
Good Luck!!!

i love your idea.........no fuss.........no muss...........and you would put your return address as
Mr. & Mrs.
just a thought .......you can have your announcements stamped and ready to go...........but please, don't mail them til the ceremony is over.....anything could happen along the way and delay your services, something as simple as a plane delayed, or an illness, whatever..........then you'd really be in a pickle!
congratulations, have a wonderful elopement! and may your wedded life be as blessed as mine has been!
