I have major knee problems. I've dislocated each of them by doing virtually nothing but twist the wrong way. The first one was about 12 yrs ago.. the last one was almost 2 years ago and still healing. The physical therapist said he hadn't seen such loose joints in a healthy person before. They ache, crack and hurt almost all the time. I'm afraid with this pregnancy (my second- my first baby is almost 2) that my joints are going to suffer quite a bit, especially with added weight.

As far as I know, I'm a healthy girl- mid 30s! Any suggestions?

Your best bet at this time may be protection...bracing, etc. If you can get away without having to take any medications or supplements, I would refrain from doing so just for the sake of the baby. A safer alternative to exercise would be a water based therapy program...much safer on the joints and you do not run as much of a risk of increasing your body temperature.

As your pregnacy progresses, your joint problems may become worse because the body secretes a hormone called relaxin to loosen the joints of the pelvis in preparation for child birth. You may be at a higher risk for injury if you already have lax ligaments.

I say your best bet is to protect yourself now, and try more aggresive treatment approaches after the baby is born.

Talk to your OBGYN about what medications are good for you to take while pregnant. You don't want to take anything that will harm the baby.
I noticed that my joints are not as strong as they used to be before I had children. Pregnancy can take a lot out of you, and we need more knowledge of what things we can do to prevent lack of calcium and things in that nature.
Please talk to your OBGYN just to be safe. I wish you the best...

Yes, you can exercise...yes, even when pregnant. Your therapist can give you exercises to increase the muscles around your knees and your legs.

Glucosomine is something you need to take for a long time for it to do any good and nope, you can't take it while pregnant or nursing, but you have plenty of time afterward to add it to your regime.
