If you're looking for "a restaurant as much about entertainment as eating" then San Diego Source has two new restaurants says:
"Two restaurants that recently opened in San Diego reflect this realization. The first, Bondi (pronounced "bond eye") Bar & Kitchen, opened in the Gaslamp; the second, The Guild, opened just south of downtown, about five minutes from Petco Park. "
Of the two, I would say that Bondi sounds like someplace I would love to go try out. But thye have a lot of suggestions on the website.

I would take them to Kemo Sabe's in Hillcrest. The best way to do it there is to get an appetizer, split an entree, and get the dessert sampler. The theme of the restaurant is The East Meets the West. Its a blend of southwestern and asian flavors. The appetizer and entrees are also served in big portions.
For the appetizer, I recommend the roasted nut crusted brie or the Arizona rolls. For entrees, I recommend the rack of lamb or the 10-spice honey chicken. Very generous portions and very good flavor.
The dessert sampler is HUGE with lots of selections. Its really good. You leave room for this. Its such a treat. I think you guys will really enjoy the dessert sampler.

SD is so big, so many areas to choose from. In the Gaslamp I would say one of the small Italian cafes along 4th & 5th streets-pasta is usually inexpensive. In Mission Valley, Prego is always good. In Old Town, La Pinata has awesone mexican food. In La Jolla-Crab Catcher is usually fun....not THE best food but a nice atmosphere.

If you are taking out a friend, would take them to the gaslamp district, and choose something that looks fun. For me, the best part of that area is choosing between the many offerings.
If you are taking out a "friend", I recommend Piatti's in La Jolla. Just romantic enough, if it is meant to be taken that way, and just informal enough if it... You know... Isn't.
