Habitat must provide everything an organism needs to survive and reproduce, otherwise the species will disappear from that particular environment. The specific needs depend on the type of organism - plants need different things than animals; terrestrial organisms have different needs than aquatic ones. For plants, they need nutrients, water and sun. Animals need food, shelter, and sometimes a special place to raise their young.

Some types of habitat provide only part of species needs, so some animal needs to move among different habitat types so all needs are met. This is why some species migrate.
