I contend that todays military is just that military they advised against.
At same time I see no way to move back from it and only more increases of interferences into and over civilain matters.
That it will still answer somewhat to a civilian leadership, not under but part of an equal partnership, with control over foreign and domestic matters becomes more daily evident: some examples such as torture, partnership Federalizing of local police forces, elimination of Possee Commitatus, and the laws governing the civilian population by deletion of rights under constitution to be more in line with " Uniform Code of MilitaryJustice" in their stead."
Not saying dangerous to population or sinister because a population has right to form such a new Union if they want.
That within the military and those who support how it is used today want such a society is the true division of US.
We have a dual society, the mass who react in predictable ways, and manipulators.
Realist over fantasy!

Basically, you have answered your own question. George Washington advised the American people to not entangle this country in the affairs of Europe (and by extension the rest of the world). He foresaw the possibility of a dictatorship, supported and maintained by a domestic military force. The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 was enacted to prohibit federal troops from acting in a law enforcement capacity within the USA. However, this act has been violated more than once, the most significant recent violation being the use of US Army equipment and personnel in the unjustified attack on the Branch Davidian compound outside Waco, TX. A large standing army poses two potential problems - 1. It could be used by the federal powers to control the population. 2. It could become a power unto itself and take control of the country through a coup d'etat. The Second Amendment must be preserved, allowing the populace to maintain privately owned weapons as a deterrent to enslavement by the federal government.

They believed that a large standing Army would led to totalitarianism and stifle individual liberty.

They much preferred a citizen Army or militia, like today's National Guard. However, the art of war and international diplomacy has become a bit more complex than it was at that time and the need for professional men of arms has increase, whether our military is too big today; I honestly can not say.

your right they said this so we didnt become a military led dictator ship like Iraq was with Saddam. But your wrong becuase that is exactly the opposite of what we are today, we have an all voluntary military that is called up during war-time. you need to do your research before asking dumb questions
