Intestinal parasites that go untreated can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea, as well as anemia and weight loss. They also prevent your dog's body from being able to absorb the nutrients from his food.

Worms are also a threat to humans--people can get roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. Children more frequently get them because they are not as hygienic as adults and they are always putting their hands in their mouth.

To treat the worms you should take a stool sample to your vet to diagnose the type of worms he has. You should also get a broad spectrum dewormer from your vet (such as Drontal) which will kill most species of worms. Still get the stool sample checked, though, in case he has something that the Drontal doesn't kill.

Avoid using over the counter dewormers, as they do not work very well and only "kill" one or two types of worms--it will not be effective for tapeworms or whipworms.

It is important that you treat your dog for worms properly, especially considering the risk of any children who may come into contact with him.

You have to get rid of the worms!!! I can't stress that enough. if the dog has heartworm there is not much you can do for it. Go to your local pet store or vet and ask for the 3 day Safegaurd wormer. It gets rid of just about everything!!!!

Please for your dog get the wormer and it costs a lot less to spend $15-$25 for a wormer than extensive vet bills.

I also heavily recommend making a vet appointment. You can do it after you worm the dog yourself to cut down on costs, but they will most likely do a fecal float test to see if there are anymore worms in the system. The longer you wait the more likely the worm infestation will kill your dog.

OK. everyone's going to hate me but oh well. When I got my dog Bosco he had intestinal worms really bad. I wouldn't have the $$ until a few days later to take him to the vet, but I wanted to do something then. I asked a friend that had been a vet tech for a few years what to do. He said since I couldn't take him in to give him a cigarette in his food. Start with a half of one (and it's just the tobacco, not the paper, too) and mix it in some canned food. If it doesn't work, the next day give him a whole one. The tobacco kills the worms in his stomach and they come out in a mucous like pouch. It's gross. But it worked for my dog and he was fine. But you should take him to the vet because if you're talking about heart worms especially he has to be started on medicine right away.

1. What type of worms?

2. You treat them by taking them to a vet to find out the type of infestation, and to get proper medication for that type.

3. Depending on the type of worms, and how heavily infested, a dog can easily die do to parasites.

Heavenly Infested? Like by Angels? Just joshing you.

Get your dog to the vet immediately. If you start treatment now your dog should be fine.
If dogs aren't treated, health problems can ensue. Anemia, weakness, thinness or bloating. But there is medicine that can kill all those buggers and good food will help alleviate any problems.

I would go to the Vet and let him plan it. A heavy infestation can form a blockage when the worm medicine kills off the adult worms. They can actually form a ball. So to the Vet for sure. Same goes for horses!

I just brought my dog to the vets because I havent given her, her heartworm medicine lately.

My vet told me that I had to have her checked before she went back on the medicine because going on the medicine and having the worms could kill her.

But if you dont treat her and she has worms, they can also kill her. These worms grow between 12-18 inches and wrap themselves around their heart.

You need to go and have her treated at the vet as soon as possible. They give them a series of shots and when they are gone, you can put them back on the heartworm medicine.

Good luck - go get the poor thing treated before it is too late. They are depending on you.

Go to a vet and buy a quality brand of worm medicine. A second choice would be to go to PetSmart or Petco. But do something soon. The worms are eating what your dog eats and he will slowly starve to death.

Well, it all depends on the types of worms. There are several types of worms a dog can be infected with from tape worms to pin worms and several other forms. Your best bet would be to take the pet to the vet and have them check her/him to see what types of worms he/she has and get the proper wormer for those types of worms. However not everybody is able to take their pet to the vet all the time for just anything. Go to the store and buy some wormer. There are several types of wormer and some that kills all kind of worms. I would go to the feed store as they have some of the better types of wormer and most likely can help you in selecting the wormer you need.
