okay, i have an African Grey parrot, her name is Dutchess. I've had her for almost a year now & she's about 20 or so years old. At first, things were pretty rough but with me working with her things got better. She now steps up and gives kisses, which is far from her climbing about the cage and striking at my my hand every chance she got [what she use to do]. I'm now thinking about getting her a friend...question is...what kind? For a while i was thinking about breeding her [for i have reason to believe she was a breeder before] but a few ppl have been telling me that she wouldn't be 'pet material' anymore. so what do i do? i was thinking maybe just getting her a friend but i'm not sure what kind or how to set things up. what kind of bird would be good with her? another grey? or maybe something different?
any advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

if you get her a friend, be sure you understand that you will be #2 and the friend will take your spot. with most bird (pets), gettin another (or even a mirror) will cause the bird to ignore you. i say, if you are really sure this is what you want to do, get her a female african grey buddy. best of luck. <3

Here's the deal. If she is near 20 y.o. You are probably too late to introduce a mate or "friend" There is a good chance that she will either be jealous and/or try to kill a new bird. If you just want something to keep her company (in a seperate cage) Get a bird that is smaller and relatively young. She will not feel threatened by it and being young, it will tend to be more passive.

My Answerr is uninteresting: The sparrows. all the sparrows. i like them b/c they are the only chook--different than the floor-feeding junco--which will come to the feeder when I placed it close to to the homestead window. they do no longer look to be as afraid by way of fact the different, extra clourful birds. I feed the wild birds purely in the wintertime. I stay in a rural section & have found out that procuring feed in the different seasons is purely a waste of $$ by way of fact the birds have lots nutrition someplace else that they won't consume from the feeder, & the nutrition is going undesirable & I finally end up having to feed the chook seed to the chickens--layer mash is a lot low priced than the chook seed.

DON'T !! The gray is finally bonding with YOU.. if you introduce another bird, you will lose all that you have gained. You will become the gray's friend, confidant, buddy and surrogate mate (even if nothing is done in that manner).

id get the same kind BUT put them in different cages next to each other until they get familiar b/c she might get jealous and kill the bird or not let him get food or what not.

You should get her a canary. The size difference will allow them to even each other out.
