To give some credit to the ancients, the "British" system was based on stuff the usual person had about themselves. Your American shoe size is the length of your foot in inches. From your nose to the end of your arm was a yard. If you walked a thousand strides (right, then left) you walked a mile. Not very scientific, but a Boy Scout using a stick found in the forest could give you the height of a standing tree to within about 10% without going out for a laser.

What is followed in US is British units of measurements. You must have noticed that the smaller denomination are in different multiples. This is similar to Dollar and Quarters. Whereas Metric system follows decimal system. All denominations are in multiple of ten. This is similar to Dollar and cents. The Metric measurements are followed by many other countries. In this linear measurements are in kilometers, meters, centimeters, millimeters instead of miles, furlongs, foot, inches; the weights are in kilograms, grams, milligrams instead of pounds, ounces; volume measurements are liters, milliliters instead of gallons, ounces. It is easy to work in metric system.
