the gestapo was the secret police of the Nazi party. Hitler did not organize the gestapo until after his election in 1938. early on the brown shirts were his means of strong arming political enemy,s. after his election to the chancellorship Hitler killed all of his main competitors within the Nazi party. after "the night of the long knives" Hitler organized the SS and Gestapo as rival semi military units both caused unwanted elements in the German political society to simply vanish. some times using torture and death as a means to an end. the gestapo could be consider the political police of the Nazi party. while the SS was the spiritual leader elite of the military. both were fanatics ,they both killed those deemed less uber than the Germanic ideal. the Gestapo would make the politically undesired vanish. they would use the method of having their prisoners dig their own graves. once completed the method of shooting the victim in the back of their head was used. the Gestapo's methods were brutal but hidden from the ordinary German.one of the things hitler ordered was the burning of the reichschancllery and blamed the burning on communist agents. in the day's following the burning hitler was offered the chancelorship. the german people believed hitler would bring secuirty and power back to the german republic. the german people chose security over freedom and payed a very heavy price. the other thing hitler did was the complete and totale subversion of the freepress. one reporter vanished the night before the 1938 elections and six months later his widow recieved his blood covered glasses in the mail.
