My lovebird pulled off the jewelry to one of my piercings. The jewelry is a small 2mm diamond set in white gold with about a 4 mm stem (this pushes into another part to hold it in place). He was flying around with it in his beak and when I finally caught him it wasn't in his beak anymore. I don't know if he dropped it and I just can't find it (it's so small) or if he swallowed it. If he did swallow it, is he going to die? Might he spit it up? Is there anything I can do? If he is going to die how long will it take? I'm very upset. Please, serious answers only.

Thank you SO MUCH for supporting me in this and offering valuable information. I am putting all of it to use. I called an emergency vet and he offered to take an xray but said the liklihood of him swallowing it was slim to none. I will go over the room with a fine tooth comb tomorrow after work ...or should I say with a pantyhose covered vaccuum:) Thanks everyone, I'll let you know if he's still being a naughty (but lively) little guy in a couple days.

put him in his cage, and wait for the inevitable to happen, which is NOT for him to die, but for him to pass the jewelry. Birds have a "crop" which they use as part of the digestive process, and something as small as you describe will eventually go right on through. The chances of it being harmful to him in any way,(except if it is surgically removed), is so small as to be non-existent.
The pantyhose over the vacumm, or in place of the bag, is a very good way to try to find it if the bird DIDN'T eat it, but rest assured, the bird will be fine.

You could take your lovebird to the vet for an X-ray. That would easily show whether the jewelry is in his crop or elsewhere. It could be surgically removed.

Lovebirds are very small birds. I don't know if an earring would pass through a lovebird's GI tract. If it were my lovebird, I would look thoroughly for the earring and, if I couldn't find it, I'd take the bird to the vet for an X-ray.

I suggest you give an emergency vet clinic a call to see if they can help you.

Sorry to hear, when he was flying around with it he shouldn't have been able to swallow it until he landed. being so small you probably wont find it if he dropped it if it was small enough the bird may pass it if he swallowed it. If you really think he swallowed it I would ring the vet or take him to the vet straight away. Good luck I hope every think works out and that he is okay.

The vacuum and the flashlight are both good suggestions to try to find the earring. If that fails, I would call a vet to get an xray. I really doubt that a small bird like that would swallow it, but if he did, it could puncture a part of the GI tract and result in peritonitis which most likely would kill him.

I personally think that the likelihood that your bird actually swallowed it is slim. Why would he? Before scaring yourself to death with the what ifs....turn off all the lights in the room where you think he could have dropped the jewelry and then get on your hands and knees with a flashlight and look for it that way. It should be sparkly and therefore stand out in the flashlight's beam. Good luck!

I think you should call an emergency vet in your area and see what they say. They may have you just wait and see, or tell you how to make him vomit, or have you bring him in. Either way, I think professional advice is the way to go.

You can also try putting a pair of pantyhose over your vacuum hose and vacuum the room he was flying around in. The pantyhose will catch the earring (or whatever) if you vacuum it up. If you find the earring, then you know he didn't eat it.

Hi, I have a lovebird and I know they can be alittle too curious. To tell you the truth I doubt it will die. I have 2 parakeets, 1 lovebird, 1 cockateil. I don't think a bird can die over that. Just to make sure I would call a vet and ask to be sure. Maybe he dropped it!! who knows!!

Go to a 24 hr vet emergency clinic and get him x-rayed.

That is a yes or no question.

The object should show up in his system. (imagine if you swallowed a 1 carat diamond, an x-ray would show where it is in your body.

No object = no problem.

If it does show up, let them tell you what to do next.

chances are he did'nt swallowed it, look around first , taking him out of the house could kill him quicker than swallowing the earing

it should be fine if he swallowed it, but if you take him to the vet it will glow really bright on xray and should be easy enough to figure out.
