this only happens when its cold and its been sitting there for a while......

sometimes it is hard to shift into 2nd gear, i sometimes have to jump to 3rd...it only happens for 2nd gear...once the car warms up, it works fine

i have a 1996 mustang cobra, 5-speed standard

When was the last time you checked or changed your trans fluid? A good synthetic fluid may help. Also your 2nd gear syncros are likely worn along with the shift forks or there pads.
Try changing the fluid 1st.

Sounds like 2nd gear syncronizer .But i would first try a fluid cchange .I recommend GM syncronmech automatic trans fluid.Lubrication propreties are better then the ford mercon.I have use this personnaly and feel transmission shifting a lot smooter
