Let me clarify, to begin with, that there is a difference between how long a drug's effects may be felt (including side effects), and how long the drug is actually in the body.
Zolpidem comes in two forms at the moment: Ambien and Ambien CR.
Ambien has an elimination half life of 2-3 hours in patients with normal hepatic function (i.e. healthy liver). Part of the Ambien CR tablet has a half life of 6-8 hours. A good rule of thumb is to multiply the half life by five to determine how long the medicine is in the body. Regular Ambien will remain in your body for 10-15 hours, or perhaps around a day for those with hepatic impairment. Ambien CR will leave some active ingredient in the body for 30-40 hours
or 1 to 2 days, maybe a little bit more for those with an unhealthy liver. I guarantee you this information is accurate.

It depends on whether you are asking about Ambien or AmbienCR (time released). Ambien stays in your system approximately 5 hours while it takes 16 hour to completely eliminate AmbienCR.

not very long at all -- ambien has very short half-life, as it is designed to help you fall asleep and quickly be eliminated so as not to cause grogginess in the morning

Easiest way is to ask the doctor who prescribed it for you. Or you can look in the PDR (Physicians' Desk Reference).
