Dark underarms is a common problem. It can be caused by deodorants/antiperspirants or the build up of dead cells, as well as by shaving. It is recommended that you get your underarms waxed and, until the skin lightens again, use deodorant/antiperspirant as little as possible.
I don't know what your chemist recommended but some people have really good luck with a product called DERMA Underarm Whitening / Peeling Set. You might want to try that, if you haven't already. I have also listed some other ideas in the sites below.
