my best friend and I both have several piercings and are planning for several tattoos. Both of us have had the same reactions around us although more focusing on the fact that it's permanent. She is still going through with it because she says she's an artist and her body is a blank slab that should have some art on it (lol) and I just think it looks beautiful (when done right). I mean it's your own body and there are worse things you can do to it. Some of them smoke and that is worse and can have a even worse permanent effect (=this is my excuse).

I'm with you on this one, it is body art, and its your body. I know they say it will look hell stupid when your old. But does that really matter?! i mean we gonna be old and wrinkly anyway, being old ain't about looks lol.
Its all that stereotyping BS that been done over the years, people think tattoos and piercings make you bad or total rebel, lmao out of control... but that's really stupid and people who think that are also really stupid.
lol my parents would let me get eyebrow piecing when i was 16, I'm now almost 18 and they wont have a choice in the matter :) .. honestly people should just grow up and move on. how does tattoos or piercings change the person ???

My professional associates, at least so far, have been very positive of my work. At least one now is intrigued enough to get one herself, a kind of "hey, that *does* look neat" kind of reaction. Folks in my social group are even more into it. I was practically forced this weekend to show the current progress on my back piece... :)
I work at a university & in high tech near Silicon Valley, so arguably I may have an unusual environment. Makes me wonder how I'd fit in if I applied at Yahoo ("More than our minimum tattoo work, but only three piercings in the ears... you may have to work on those").
There will always be people telling you what to do. They'll try to hold you back from what you want so they don't feel as bad about their fear to live their lives as they'd like Misery loves company, I suppose.
Note to BrendaWise: You need to support your assertions. My research indicates that as much as 11% of people tattooed dislike their art. However, the study didn't distinguish between those who hated tattoos and those who just didn't like the way a given piece worked out. I can think one or two regulars who falls into that category who're getting coverups & they are very pro-ink.

I think that anything can be taken to an extreme, but tatts and piercings do not look bad in moderation. I do not think that face piercings and tattoos look professional...HOWEVER, that also depends on what you do for a living. SOme people's jobs do not require a professional demeanor.
I have a navel ring and 2 tatts, 1 on the foot and 1 on the stomach. I cover them and you would never know...DO what makes you happy!!

You're right, it IS body art. In my opinion it's no different than coloring your hair. Many people these days have at least one tattoo, but hide them under their professional "career" clothes due to society's views about body modification. I don't understand why this is still so taboo, especially when people get tattoos often to memorialize a very important person or event in their life. Having piercings and tattoos doesn't change one's character. It may emphasize a certain lifestyle they like to pursue but "do not judge a book by its cover." I know many very intelligent and wonderful people who have tattoos and piercings.

I love my tattoos, and I also have multiple piercings in both of my ears, and my nipples are pierced. I get the "look" all the time and I wish that people would just grow up. I look at it this way: it's my body and I should be able to express myself in whatever way I choose. It ain't hurting anybody, so nobody should care in my opinion. All of my tattoos mean something to me, they're not just random crap, so it bothers me even more when people talk smack about it!

i'm tatted and pierced! i love my work. i've drawn all but one of my tattoes. i've got my ears pierced twice, my tragus, my nose and septum, my madonna, my nipple and my bellybutton.
from personal experience, my tattoes and piercings get a lot of attention, but mostly in a positive way! people love my artwork, and they always wanna know..."did that hurt?!?!" they've been a great conversation starter!!
i've never wanted a job where i couldn't express myself. that's why i'm a cosmetologist.
it's just rediculous to judge someone, especially in this day and age, over a tattoo or piercing. they've become so mainstream, it no longer "means" that someone is "lazy" or "grungy" or doesn't do a good job. the stigma should be gone by now.
i look at it as just a form of expression, like a hairstyle! i don't judge you for having long, blonde, highlighted hair, so why do you pick on me?

in earlier years people detested tattoos and piercings but now tattoos and piercings are becoming more acceptable for all age groups. i like tattoos but my parents don't like them. a lot of it has to do with the way they were raised. our generation has become more acceptable of tattoos and piercings. sometimes that has to do with why people lecture you on the topic. in some countries tattoos and piercings are for spiritual or cultural purposes. in the united states they are for fun and body decoration. but what one person may consider taboo is completely acceptable to another. it's not really a subject for debate it mostly has to do with what you consider to be acceptable.

Tattoos and piercings have have evolved so much. They can be ritualistic, fashion or just meaningful to the person. Although it can be inappropriate for them to be flaunted in some places, it would never be inappropriate for a person to have a tattoo or piercing if that is what they wanted for themselves.

What you and I do with our bodies is our business! I find it insane! We are supposed to be the advanced nations, yet the developing world seems to be more accepting of tattoos and piercings. People need to stop judging each other by appearance.
