At horse races I see some horses with these really weird white bridles on, and i was wondering what they were and what they were made out of.

Most racing bridles are made out of nylon, but there are some that are leather and others which are made from canvas. The nylon ones have reins which are coated with rubber to make them easier to hold onto, and also more flexible. Leather bridles look nice, but they can break under hard use unless they are well cared for. Blinkers are made from a nylon based cloth as well. As to the color of the bridles, they are white or bright to make the horse's heads' easier to see and identify- which in turn helps to make the announcer's job easier.

Although in general, bridles are made from good quality leather, the flat/turf horse-racing industry have found that nylon or plastic is more durable and less likely to break. They can be dunked in a bucket of water for easy cleaning.

Rules in the UK now state that buckles only may be used on bridles, rather than billet hooks and that the reins should be sewn in the middle, rather than buckled. Jockeys used to knot their reins, just in case the buckle in the middle broke at a crucial time.

Why they are white I do not know. I personally think they look awful. Let's just hope the trend/fad does not spread to National Hunt racing. That would be just too much!

almost all bridles are made out of nylon, the same material a haulter is made out of. and they come in different colors as well. That is all I use on my horses is either a black or a white nylon bridle

Some are leather some are nylon some are nylon coated with a rubbery type stuff to make the reins have some grip to them.
We had both leather and a few nylon.
They use alot of the nylon now as you can match your stable colors.
