On your stomach, it'd be a problem. But this is what I do:

Lay on your back and put your legs up at a 90 degree angle. Then put a dumbbell (whatever weight you prefer) on your shins, right near your feet. Then do regular sit ups with your feet up. You should feel the burn faster than you would doing a regular sit-up.

If you put the 20 lbs dumbell ON your stomach, you won't do too much.

However, if you hold it on your chest as you do full sit-ups (your chest hits your knees) it should give some improvement.

If you can get to a gym or an inclined surface, doing sit ups on an incline so your feet are at a higher level than your head is great.

Also, dangling from a pull up bar or tree branch by your knees and sitting up to touch the bar gives you a good muscular burn.

Finally... practicing punching / boxing / martial arts will give you gorgeous abs, as you are forced to use all of your abs without realizing it. You will get great definition while having more fun.

O.K. try this, take a twenty five lb weight, a steel one with handles cut in such as golds gym (can be purchased at walmart); lay on the floor, get stretched out real good with back as flat as possible-legs straight out, grab weight and bring it behind (under) the head; now keeping grip of the weight do a crunch.BUT at the same time you are crunching
lift both feet off the ground about 6 or 7 inches-Hold it for a ten count and slowly go back down, relax breathe 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 and again with the combo crunch and leg lift. do ten reps; now, still holding your weight stretch back with it as far as you can stretch -hold the weight- now keeping both legs together lift tem to 90 degrees and lower them, before they hit the ground, lift them again, but this time to the left side, then down, dont let them touch the ground, now again, but to the right. thats ONE; now do this nine more times. This is how you get the tummy, if its not burnin' yer not earnin' keep it going and watch an amazing transformation.

use an excercise ball and do workouts such as bench press and shoulder press, curls, etc. with dumbells. doing excercises on the ball forces you to activate your core muscles while doing these other effective excercises. do ab workouts with a medicine ball
