Keep in mind that it's just the "wet" dog food in cans and pouches that has been recalled, there's nothing wrong with the dry stuff. Menu Pet Food (the producer of the recalled food) supplies food to about fifty different brands so for now it would probably be best to stick dry food anyway. If your dogs are used to their food being wet, try putting some water on their dry food and letting it sit for 15 minutes or so before feeding it to them.

The BARF diet includes Raw Food and Bones - some people don't feel comfortable feeding raw - but I've had great experience with it. Just because the of the small size of our dogs we actually have found that purchasing raw food already provided is easier for us. We use a product called Nature's Variety Raw - we feed the Beef and Lamb - and the great thing is there are other nutrients combined in the raw food so they are getting a complete meal so no supplements are necessary. We also do canned Merrick which is sold at organic/holistic pet stores that has human grade ingredients in it and no animal by products - and no synthetic vitamins (i.e. Vitamin K supplement that is believed to cause illness in dogs). It actually has real blueberries, veggies and meat in it. We like the cowboy, wild buffalo and venison blends. If you prefer to cook and add suplements I know Nature's Logic had a great powder additive that we liked - but it was very time consuming for us to cook so we just decided to stick with the raw and canned Merrick. The websites give a complete listing of all ingredients so you can see what exactly goes into them

Here's some links on the BARF diet and links to the raw medallions & Merrick that we use

Basically, you want foods without corn, wheat, soy, sorghum, by products, etc in the food along with named meat sources (no mystery meat or fat!). Purina, Pedigree, Science Diet, and yes, Iams and Eukanuba are not suitable foods. Try Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul, Innova, Canidae, Blue Buffalo, Merrick, California Natural, Natural Balance, and the Honest Kitchen. My dogs were on Chicken Soup for quite a while before we switched to raw and generally did well.

I just read today that you can feed your dog raw chicken and beef. I thought about it but you have to feed the dog 1-2lbs of meat a day...I don't think I have the money or time to devote to that chore.

On each one of those websites there should be a search feature where you can find out who carries that food in your area.
