A little bird was flying in the air. It met and asked the leader of 1st flock of birds, "Can you tell me how many of you here?" I dunno said the leader." Then came another flock of birds, and the little bird asked the same question. The leader of the 2nd flock replied, "We're half of the first group, but If you join us all of us will be 100. So how many was the first group?"

Let N = the number of birds in first group.
N/2 is the number of birds in second group
N+N/2 = 100 for the total. Now take away the asking bird and that is 99

Solving 3N/2 = 99 so multiply both sides by 2
You will get 3N=198 so divide both sides by 3
Now you get N=198/3 which gets you 66 birds in group 1

There were 66 in the first flock. 33 is half of 66, so 33 was the second, and 66+33+1 is 100!
