toughening the skin will come from calluses forming on them and that will come from using them. get some good gloves to help protect them until you get accustomed to the work. even after you get accustomed to it, you still use the gloves to protect you from splinters or cuts and scrapes.

Well you will toughen up sooner or later and a good pair of gloves will go a long Wayy...... The British wa said to soak their feet in tea to toughen them up. I go More for the smoothing of the pain myself. We use to us a product called pine oil to soothe the pain.
Now my Auntie how was a life long nurse recommended this for easing scraper's/ cuts and general hand pain... Soak hands in a bowel of urine... Boy this grossed us kids out but it works.

2 things. 1 is to buy some good gloves. 2 is really nasty you can pee on your hands. Yankees catcher Jorge Posada and Mets Outfielder Mosies Alou do it.
